    Stirpel's Stuff

    Hey there

I've been lurking around here for months and years and I think now - after I got my account password back - it's time for my own sketchbook!
Perhaps a short overview to my experience in drawing? I study Design & Illustration at Münster UAS (Germany) since a year now. Before I started going there, drawing mostly felt like less fun but more a cramp. As you can see here in my first post – these are sketches from a year ago. For comparison, I'll post some pics of the stuff I've drawn just yesterday.

I hope to get some useful critique here. I'm thankful for every feedback! Enough rant – here's something to peek at.

Hey, and welcome to CA! Or more like, welcome to the sketchbook-posting-club

Your new life drawings are very good, especially the first 2. Very good lines and life in them. Keep them coming!

Currently I'm doing some watercolor exercises like this bobtail lizard (its called "Tannenzapfenechse" in german ).
Overall I'm more the traditional drawer, but will train some digital stuff soon, I think.

    Hey there.

Here's some new stuff I did today. First some life drawings. The last two are some concepts for a short storyboard I'm working at currently. I'll post it when it's done.

Three pages of a storyboard for a comic, done for a class at uni.
The exercise was to develop a story (comic or childrens book) and to draw the storyboard for the first pages. My story's briefly about three teenager boys who make crazy plans aiming to get a girlfriend.

The next week's all about developing the characters. Do you think that it would be more logical to do it the other way (developing first the story plus characters and then the storyboard)?

The faces and heads could use some work (take a closer look at skulls/muscles, that will also help with the cortoon-style expressions) but the figures are great just like the coloring! Keep posting
Please take a look at my Sketchbook! <- Comments are highly appreciated and returned C:

There is definitely an improvement since the stuff you've drawn a year ago.
I especially like the figure drawings, the lizard and that painting with the diver. Heyriel is right with the heads but still good work. Keep it up.

Heyriel & AriyaLothiriell, thanks for your crits, much appreciated! I've definitely got to work hard on human proportions, you're right. I try not to skip a life drawing class ;-)

Here are some more character sketches, mostly facial expressions. Sorry for the crappy quality, my sketchbook is too large - or rather my scanner's to small and I had to take photos of these.

The third water colored character got much too square and old-looking. I think I should work him all over.
For the first time I've used a colored pencil for this week's life drawing session. I believe it worked out quite well.

Your watercolours are very, very nice -you have great control over the medium, which isn't easy. More!

AllyAlbon, thanks for you comment! I think watercolor is great fun. A good control over the colors demands much patience, unfortunately .
Here's some new stuff, we have to do some Photoshop stuff for a class. I'm absolutely beginner in Digital Painting, I would be very grateful for any advice.

The first one is a colored and textured scan:

This one's a Photoshop-only WIP, I'm struggling with modeling the shapes and all...it looks very rough all over. Hope this improves with more practice.

I really enjoyed looking through your sketchbook today.

What really captured my attention is your first few postings where you have
some line drawings with added color or shading...with what I think is water colors...
And then other postings with your water color work.

You line work...is it just outlined after you have sketched with a pencil?

I would like to see how your work evolves.

BTW, I'm a noob...so take what I say as such...

    Thanks for your comments!

wannabeanimator, currently I'm working with many different materials, just to have a go at as many stuff as possible and doing some trial and error. (That's part of our design&illustration studies here at Münster UAS)
I've used watercolor for that single nude drawing in post #6, the two lizards, the diver, the boys' character sketches and the popcorn guy. Concerning the line work: Again, totally different. The watercolors are mostly applied directly on the pencil sketch. Sometimes I'll add some fineliner after coloring, sometimes I have no pencil sketch at all but drawing directly with a fineliner.

The pizza boy is a pencil based fineliner drawing, then scanned, vectorized and coloured in Photoshop. Speaking of the pizza boy: I've just added a background:
