    Tobys sketchbook

Hey guys and or females, I am just starting this thread because I need feedback so I can improve on my drawing/painting skills.

I drew apples everyday for a week to improve my observational painting skills, These are the first and last paintings of the week.

Nice colors! It definitely looks like a good start! I would try getting some areas of tight definition to indicate the focal point in each piece while still leaving some loose brushstrokes, which I think you are aiming at doing. Good exercises and keep on!

    Sherlock

After getting some feedback, Iv painted a scene from Sherlock Holmes, still trying to do it quickly but with a realistic look, I got some advice to try and add some tight definition to the focal points in each of my paintings, with this is mind I tried to add detail to the eyes of Sherlock. obviously its not the most proportionally correct painting, but Thats what practice is for! Please give any feedback!

nice studies! my advice would be to use more colors (like red and green ) to make the skin more realistic. they also could use more contrast, darker shadows and more highlights, because they look quite flat. If you don´t see this at first, try turning the picture to black&white.
    keep it up!

    all right, you want feedback

i won't give you advice about blending modes, brushes etc. at this point of your route there's no sense to do it...

first of all you need to learn fundamentals,

    like :
perspective, color theory, anatomy, figure drawing, etc.

your won't learn by coping photos in that way you're only multiplying your mistakes

here's some examples of stuff that can help you
    http://www.ctrlpaint.com/
    http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/
    http://jamesgurney.com/site/books

you can also just dig the internet for free stuff, there's no rule

    cheers

    Portrait one

I will be painting a portrait everyday for a week to try and improve on the faces I can draw from imagination. Please give feedback. I really like the eyes on this piece, I made them sharper so the focus of the image would be on them.

I can see some improvement! I don't use any computer media to create my art so I have no direct feedback about that, but what I have learned from CA is that you need to really consider the few good comments/critiques that you receive and really explore what that person is trying to tell you. It can get arduous for someone to describe to you every mistake you're making, so you have to realize the specifics for yourself. People can only give so much detail through writing in this format. I think some of the faces are flat and what might help you is to do them in black and white first so you can get down the dimensions/light/contrast/proportions/etc. without having to also think about color theory. You could also flip them upside down or look at them from a distance to help you realize critical errors. And do more life studies..photo studies are good, but aren't the best way to learn. I also agree that you should scour the internet for resources or check out some sketchbooks on here that use your medium and learn from them..maybe even try to recreate something they have done to help you understand some of your issues. Hope I have helped in some way! Keep it up, more more more!!!
