ROUND #276 - Spaceman Spiff and the Disgusting Droggzax

    topic:

ROUND#276: Spaceman Spiff and the Disgusting Droggzax

Spaceman Spiff is perhaps the best known alter ego of Calvin in Bill Watterson’s comic: Calvin and Hobbes. Spiff is known for his seemingly endless slue of crashes on remote dusty, reddish desert planets, populated by vicious and gaudily-coloured creatures with not a small degree of animosity towards our hero. Your challenge this week is to design a fictional creature that Spaceman Spiff might encounter on one of his many ill-fated voyages to the dusty desert worlds that populate Calvin’s imagination. All I’m giving you about the creature is it’s name -the disgusting droggzax- and some images of other aliens Spiff has encountered, to get your imaginative juices flowing. After that, it’s all up to you.

    Round Requirements:

    - The creature must inhabit a reddish wastland environment (think: surface of Mars, for inspiration).

    - The creature should be bright colours and should feature at least 3 very different hues.

    - The creature should have the feel of a creature from a Spaceman Spiff strip of Calvin and Hobbes.

    Deadline:

    October 23rd, 7:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

    Finals go here: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthr...roggzax-Finals

Hey everyone. It's been a LONG time since I've taken part, and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to contribute something to this amazing topic!

Calvin and Hobbes is basically the defining literature my childhood, and Bill Waterson remains an artistic inspiration to me to this day.

I only hope I have time to finish it before the deadline. I'm super busy, but I had to at least post something to the WIPs.

Here are my base designs and a start on the creature 2 hours in, not sure if im going to finish it since it looks nothing like the comic style and probably will get disqualified

andartarius - I never said anything about style, so no, you would not be disqualified for that. On the other hand, I did specify that the creature should be at least 3 distinctly different hues and that it should be brightly coloured. On that count you would be eliminated.

so far my entry for this week

i tried for some fast desert running animal which is a bit doglike.

    tell me what you think

    Christian Madsen
There seems to be something a bit strange about the right shoulder. it looks a bit too separated to the body.
Also the joint on the left arm looks quite different to the right one.
Are there going to be some feet too?

    aburnier
Definitely the right style love the character too
Hope you will have time to finish it! d'love to see it in color!

    meteor panda
Wow that looks some mixture of a lot animals definitely crazy creature.
I think it would give the creature more flow if you would rework the line of the plates on its back
a bit more clear. And the tail looks a bit like as if it wouldve been poked into the creature.

    alexson
looks nice so far! watiting to see more!

    andartarius
i loved the center right creature quite a lot
will be interesting how you will add the colours to the now quite stealth creature

    gdonaldson
    so far most hilarious creature
love the dynamics of the creature and you definitely got the style right!

Here's my entry with some paint on it. Not 100% done yet, just gonna add some drool etc. because the Disgusting Droggzax sounds like something that drools alot.

cheers skodone, you seem to have a green light coming from under your creature but no light source? you could also get some more depth into your piece by using distance fog effects like alekson has done to focus the viewer on the most near or important parts of the image. Also it might be an idea to add a thin rim light edge to the parts of the creature that are most lit by the sun from behind it, currently it has a bit of a dark outline even in the sunny parts.

Alekson, love the realism in your lighting, you could put in spiff or a crashed spaceship or even just some rocks to give more of a sense of scale?

    thanks donaldson...

ure right about the green lightsource... im quite new to the greyscale to color method and still trying around with it...
the green light is somehow the effect of the layer mode seems i should overpaint that part a bit more...

i will consider your tips tomorrow and try around a little more...!

alexson - Great rendering and sense of form, but again I feel the need to emphasize this point in the brief: - The creature should be bright colours and should feature at least 3 very different hues.

I'm about to start painting it but I'm not sure about the shading. Perhaps I should add some shading to the background to increase the depth in the picture.
I couldn't keep myself from adding Spaceman Spiff, not sure if that is allowed or not, but I did it anyway.

    Skodone
Oh, yeah that shoulder looks crappy, didnt notice it actually. Thanks!
I went with tentacles instead of feet because I find that tentacles are more disgusting.

yeah and it technically cant swallow with that throat haha hey its a cartoon lol
...maybe the tongue creature retracts into the throat area allowing the big nasty mouth to close somewhat, who knows!? well I did kinda want to have a frame showing a valley of green hills with blue tufts on top before this image here and make more of a story of it like these green mouth creatures all bunch together to confuse people into thinking they are a landscape/hills but it didnt seem necessary and its also rather difficult to convey haha.

Alexson nice colour choices on your final!

Thanks alot, guys for the feedback on my image I really appreciate it. Si_swe, you are right I didn't follow the brief that well I'll def. keep that in mind for the next round! I added a tad more color variation to my final entry in the finals thread.

Hey guys! The first thing I thought of when I read the name "Disgusting Droggzax" was a dog. The neighborhood bulldog, happy and kind, slobbering all over the kids... Of course Spiff would see it for its true shape as the fearsome Disgusting Droggzax!Name: COW276-WIP01.jpg
