I dont find it exactly outrageous ^^ its just well ...pretty commonly know what that is, sure there are many things I dont know ^^,that doesnt mean that I cant express wonderment if someone doesnt know something that for me and everyone I know is common knowledge.(I know , one could now argue that some tribesmen in the jungle in brazil surely do have a different point of view on "common knowledge" but lets not take it that far , as this wasnt the intent of my comment in the first place, because one could say that Germany and the US arent that far apart when it comes to the basic knowledge of "things" ^^ ) I would say its hard to not know such a common thing as a turban, then again that wasnt judgemental ^^ just a little startled, for me that is equal to not knowing what a car is, or a baseball-cap. Again: no judgement in this, just surprise - or to be more precise the question "How come?"

That's one of many examples. Often I've seen Sikhs come here at my workplace and people whisper "terrorist" and other garbage out of sheer ignorance.

...of course you realize there are hundreds of turban styles, and they all wrap differently. And whoa betide you if you put the wrong style on the wrong person!

India in particular has some wild turban styles. Look up Mughal court painting and check out the variety in the crowd scenes.

Speaking as someone who is both Muslim (familiar with head gear) and from the subcontinent (familiar with Sikh style turbans), if we're getting into structure, keep this fact in mind: when people from particularly hot countries wrap fabric around their heads, it's to keep cool, keep their hair out of their face, etc... it's meant to be purely functional-- it's not that different from a bandana.
The Sikh style turban-- and this is exclusive to Sikhs-- their turban is designed to bind their hair. Removing or cutting ones hair is forbidden in the Sikh faith and so Sikh men (and some women), having very long hair, keep it tied up neatly in their turbans-- so it's not just a wrap around the head, but a wrapping around a long, thick cord of hair that is then wrapped around the head. Basically, there's a structure underneath.
