    Soulis Sketchbook

Figure I should go ahead and start one of these to get myself in the habit of drawing more.
Contrary to the introductory art this thread will probably be mostly of studies and art fundamentals: So critique is naturally insanely appreciated.
    Thanks for dropping by!

A value study of an apple. I'm gonna start by using a more pencil like brush with hatch marks to produce value for now.

Another Value study. Tried to actually use a brush this time instead of a 3 pixel one this time.

Bananas are the best fruit ever....period.

I set up another fruit value study, but the picture went all out of focus. So here's I decided to do the daily sketch group thing.

Heya, congrats on starting to sb (: First things first, your line is very scribbley at the moment. The brush study you did of the banana was an improvement on that, but you need to use a hard edged brush, cause you lose a lot around edges with soft brushes and you have no definition. Are you using a tablet? I would suggest temporarily going back to pencil and paper and starting your studies there tonally, before trying digital - you can only learn digital if you're completely happy drawing and shading with an actual pencil first I think. But in terms of digital work, try to squint at your reference or the object, if your doing it from life, and then with a fairly big hard brush just block in where you see light and dark, and then pick tones in between to blend. Don't be afraid to use a big contrast between light and dark. Try to stay away from shading with small brushes if you can (: I hope this helps a little!

Your telling me man, I didn't draw anything for about a week and a half.

Tried to go with something a little more complex this time with a human hand holding something, i'm not that
Enthused by the result(anatomy issues, painting the knife in perspective, Ect), but at least it's something.

Stock photography by the wonderful Marcus Ranum:

    And the model Tony Gibble:
    http://mjranum-stock.deviantart.com/...m-stock))&qo=7

Probably be using more of his stuff for future studies. I'm also building a light box for my own stock uses tomorrow so I'll see how that goes(I don't care if its 3 a.m. November 5th
is when I say it is.)

That knife isss quite wonky, just get the straight lines on it correct and it'll look fine (the angles and stuff)
The values are coming along, but the mixing looks like it needs more work
Any more hand studies you got going around? :s and good luck on that light box xD

I'm in the school of thought that the tablet is just another medium, to be mastered as such. here are some figure studies.

I once found a thread on /ic/(4chan's critique board) were everyone was posting their piles of sketchbooks, it was pretty daunting seeing how much some artists have worked, even on the amateur level.

So I figure Exam week is the perfect time to crack down on myself and start drawing and posting here daily.

I did this in roughly 15 minutes only to realize halfway though that I messed up the values in the face, thoughts are appreciated(oh god please help me) none the less.

Don't be afraid to paint over it on another layer! Try using a higher opacity so it doesn't look so blurry :0
Next study, try to paint with opacity just at 80-100%

(I just got it now so this study doesn't reflect the advice you gave me)

you're doing pretty good so far, but there needs to be more of it. I'm not sure if you draw more than what you post here, but you should try to do at least something everyday.

Hey there, I'm just learning to draw, so I'm not fully qualified to give advice, but I'd suggest using pencil to draw until you become more proficient in perspective/line/anatomy/etc. It's a lot easier to control than a tablet pen and you can erase any mistakes you make, unlike a pen. Also, make sure to take time to study the 'boring' things like perspective and line, since even though they might not seem to be making much of an impact, they'll train your hand and your brain to work much easier with what you're drawing. Last of all, drawing from life is 1000x better than drawing from images! Even if you need to use images to practice poses and anatomy, take some time out occasionally to go out with your sketchbook and sketch people going about their every day business.

    Hope this helped, good luck!

Mewball -Working on getting into the day to day habit is really hard. I did do alot of technical stuff over that time gap(perspective, shadow, landscape) that I didn't post here.
Nixe_dremer -Thank you! I've actually heard most of that stuff, but I always wish that there someone told me 5 years ago so keep spreading that knowledge.

I drew some fruits in real-life at one angle of light(i'm gonna mix this up later.) The last one is an clementine which I could not render.
Known(presumed) issues that I would like help with:
    -No line confidence
    -Bad blending
    -Orange rendering

    Critique is always welcome.
