E.O.W Round #197: Half Obliterated Space Hangar

    E.O.W Round #197:

    TOPIC: Half Obliterated Space Hangar
    suggested by hekatoncheir

    Brief:

"The hangar was badly damaged. Badly? Catastrophically even. Debris everywhere. Wreckage that a sci fi author couldn't even hope to describe in accurate detail. Captain, I guess this means you'll have to see it for yourself. The graphic detail; the sad remnant of a monolithic structure" ----- "ROGER THAT."

Howie; I think I like the second one on the bottom right side, its got a nice half-destroyed, half-intact feeling to it.

When I first saw this topic I was like, jeez someone's been playing too much Dead Space. CLICHEEE. Then I noticed it was my suggestion... and realize at the time, I was playing Dead Space.... :| Brb facepalming myself at myself.

Howie: uber awesome thumbs! I actually really like the upper right thumb because there's a lot more disorder in it. It feels like it'd have a good mixture of debris and space station home decor.

Urötskidoji: oo I like the second one. It kind of gives you that feeling on top of a cliff where there's nothing else in the distance. I think if you shrink the platform a bit, and just open up the amount of space (er, universe-space) around it, it'll feel more isolated. Unless you don't want that. lol.

Also realized one of my thumbs (ie, the one I ended up choosing) looks kind of like one of yours... :| I sorry. Perhaps we were on the same space ship when it happened...

    WIPWIP, good to be back
Stupid question: Since there's no atmosphere in space, how would you imply scale and depth without atmoshperic perspective or is it just a case of
'fuck you that's why' because that's what I am doing atm ^_^

hekatoncheir Thanks for the idea! It sounds cool so I´m going to explore that!

Pixeltuner I guess you could add some kind of atmospheric effect if say, the station debris is situated inside of a nebula or in a planetary ring, or some other spacy stuff that you can use as an excuse

Urotskidoji: Yeah, I was thinking about spacedust and such, because it works 'kind' of the same on light as atmosphere does Maybe even ash from the fires when the station got destroyed which is now floating in zero gravity. Enough excuses to be made up

Pixel: Well there is dust/debris in space, so you can get a bit of a haze.... Maybe. Close enough. Nice start! Gimme an update bro! >

Corrick: dat blue @_@. I am anticipating some specular highlights now...

howie: ooo cool values. Although my only issue is that the metal kind of look like vines because of the way it curves.

Adrian: well.. it looks like it's a half obliterated hanger... just on fire. ^^

LukasN: I like that you have foreground elements (the crates and whatnot( and you should totally add a little more into the background to be consistent. It's messy in there after a crash! More debris, metal, crap everywhere~~~

Urötskidoji: yeeeee. Nice update. Although unless a giant ass cleaver just sliced into the hangar, I don't think the floor would be broken so cleanly. 0.o

Update on mine. argh not sure what to do with it now, because it still doesn't feel finish. :|

    It looks very nice Mooglesarelittle
As you put in more detail, you might want to think about adding more objects that reminds the audience of the structure being a hangar. (gas tanks, cranes, old space shuttles etc). I'm curious what the colors are going to look like!

hekatoncheir: to finish it up maybe add some dust and debris in the air? (very soft) And blur some foreground items, so that there is real focus in your image.

This is my WIP. Anyone has any critiques?

thanks hekatoncheir, I couldn't agree with you more

so I got pretty far a long with my original image, but I wasn't really liking it so I started over and decided to try and model something in 3d first and then try and find a composition that way.

I still have a lot of detail to fill in, but I'm much happier with this direction

here is what I did with the old one: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kEBJf_HNnX...hangarwip3.jpg

    and the new direction:

Hey all , This is my first time entering into one of CA's challenges, after chatting with Mooglesarelittle about his entry it motivated me to finally give EOW a crack, been wanting to for a while now, so here goes. This is what I have so far, and the little story I created for it.

Story: What do you think these so called space pilots do in their spare time kid? Well I'm goin to tell ya, not that you'll need tellin more than once, it's always the same damn thing. It's a few drinks and then off, blasting through the nearest zero sec asteroid belt, or when a few of these spacers are together and feeling particularly stupid, ya can find them racing through the ruins of one of the old Monolith class Haulers. Can't even count how many times they've reported that some fool has been found mangled and driftin in space around some old derelict. Hell, they're practically inviting them since the FAA lit up those wrecks in preparation for their new big reclamation scheme, like the last one ended up getting anywhere, no one wants the contract to tear down those death traps.

I'm really digging the enormity of some of these pieces. (RobStrachan, Android411, Hektoncheir, Corrick)

Hekton- In response to your 'what to do now' question - I think you're over-highlighting your image, making it hard to settle on one solid focal point. If you look back at your thumbnails, you nailed that aspect in just about every one. My eye is drawn to the focal point & then travels around the image. I'd suggest going back in and decreasing the contrast & saturation of the areas surrounding your focal point. Badass piece.

Here are my thumbs - I think i'm gonna go with the bottom right. . .

    Sick work everyone.
