    Ali's 2012 paintings

    Hello!

It's been a few years since I posted, but thought I would share some of my recent personal work.

I'm gearing up for a animated short I hope to finish in the next couple years, so most of these images are pre viz for that.

It also seems like the posting protocol is different then when I last posted, so if I'm not following the rules correctly with this thread, please let me know.

Any crits or comments are appreciated!

juliuslim - Typically I've always just used the standard hard round brush with either shape dynamics or transfer, but this year, with these images I've been experimenting for the first time with texture brushes. I just hunted around online and downloaded a bunch of different brush packs from different artists, and have been experimenting, and now I have it down to about fifteen or so I'm finding myself using more regularly. The ones that introduce slight jitters in hue/sat/value are interesting.

    Thanks razz and chaser226!

The wilderness scenes are breathtaking, especially the forest ones. The style captures all the movement of the trees and what might be lurking in them. It's fantastic!

    Ali,

I really like those cottage paintings, nicely done, and the raccoon is great, nice character and the painting was well handled. Some of your paintings suffer from lack of texture though and it makes them look kinda plastic. In particular the marti & kupo painitng (the human character) the ski tractor and those tree designs...just need a little more tlc to really solidify them. Nice work though keep going!

Katt Leeds, thegrayslater, ZombieMariachis - Thanks!
    Murphy93 - ?
    Vigistry - Thanks!
Sprogis7 - Thanks. I agree about the plasticy look on those pieces. This year marks my first time experimenting with textured brushes and making communicating specific materials a priority. Right now I have two different workflows, a more layered based approach and a a la prima one, the latter gives richer texture but doesn't give me the security net I'm used to with the more layered approach. Still experimenting with ways to get the best of both worlds. Thanks for the crits and encouragement! Also I looked at your site and you've got some great stuff there!

Ok this stuff is just too awesome. I can't see how the animation would incorporate the
style you've developed in these, but if it does it will be breath-taking like the illustrations.
    Magnificent work.

    Auds, and Jonsiva - Thanks!

Line - Thanks! I'm still experimenting with what the final look of the animation will be. I'm guessing it will be something like Studio Ghibbli, with realistic lush painted backgrounds, and more traditionally cell shaded characters.
