ROUND#274: Cancer

Welcome back to Creature of the Week, we will now be starting out rounds on Tuesdays at 7pm PST (GMT-8 ). The day may be subject to change but you can expect that tuesdays will now the regular day as Wednesdays have previously been. Without further ado, let's get to the brief.

Cancer is a loaded word. It can mean something as banal as a crab or the horoscope you read, or it can be the disease which fills so many with dread and takes away so many loved ones. This week the brief is to take a single word as inspiration for a creature and to transform that singular word into a bestial manifestation. This week your job is to create a beast which, to you, represents the word Cancer in any of its forms with any or all meanings associated with the word. If you decide to take the Zodiac route, think about creative ways to play on that, don't just give us a giant crab. If you take the disease route, think about what cancer is, think about the parasitic nature of tumors and the way in which cancer proliferates. Obviously, this round is up for a lot of interpretation and I'd like to keep this round as open as possible, but remember to keep COW's rules in mind.

Requirements this Week:

- Your creature must somehow embody the word "Cancer"

- Your creature should take into account the potential meanings of the word. It need not take into account all of them, but it should at least heavily imply one.

I already have a great idea for this piece! Hopefully I can find time and motivation to do these. I have tried to participate before, but school got in the way. I hope by doing this I can find a way to decrease the amount of time it takes to paint while still increasing my abilities and techniques!

Exploring some thumbs. Trying to fall in love but still no spark gonna do some studies of existing animals that I find inspiring for this topic to refresh my mental library and perhaps pick up a thing or two. More to come!

Hey, DV glad to see you participating again! I really like the sketches you're producing right now, but if you aren't feeling inspired, do what you gotta do. I have to say I love the creepy combo of centaur-like anatomy and arthropods that you have going on in #7. If you're looking for existing creatures to study, might I suggest looking at electron micrographs in addition to photos. Things like the "Water Bear" come to mind.

ninety9 - I have, for the sake of everyone's eyes, switched the text back to it's standard dark brown. Cheers!

LordLouis - Great start. Feeling a bit wobbly, so try to see if you can get the same types of forms while creating more structurally practical limbs.

Here's my WIP. It may be just me being blind to my own work after having worked on it for several hours straight, but I feel like it's difficult to read and personally I'd like to make it crisper, more detailed and less painterly. But we shall see how well that goes.

wip. Decided to scrap the idea of doing a specific thumb, and instead do some freestyling based on what I'd already created. Starting to like the direction this is going!



Vyse, your final is looking good! there's still more time to work on it though if you wanna work on a background, more than 24 hours

It's getting there. I had trouble with the head, but I've fixed it now. Next I'll sort out the limbs and how they attach to the body, then I just render the thing as much as I can.

DV, thanks! Yeah I think I leave it be, couldn´t pull a background on the same detail-level as the creature so fast, and I fear it would end up looking awkward. It´s fine like this for now.
And nice design yourself, btw! Very creepy, like it =)
