OK, so... I finally gathered the courage to do a sketchbook thread. I'm trying to get out of the visual rut I seem to be in, so any critique is most welcomed.
Thanks a bunch!

these are some thumbnail-ish painter doodles I did with a mouse, while waiting for my tablet pen order to finally get here. Trying to stick to the essential shapes for now. Not sure if visible
And some Harmony doodles I partially shaped up in Painter afterwards. Still with a mouse. Gah.

This is one sketch that took much too long. Starting to think my brain is rotting O.o
That last one is awesome. I think keep that style for more finished work. O:

Just lookin to improve.
Thanks! And... yeah, only recently got my hands on Painter AND my tablet at the same time. Gonna do more of these, hopefully I'll even learn something from them
*edit* : added aforementioned 'more'

moaaaaar!
Painter again - trying to learn how to use it properly. Bit strange after having used only Photoshop, but I really like it so far.
(semi-random doodles while playing Darksiders 2)
'Crappy phone picture quality, or how I found a way to force myself to do thumbnail sketches' (so long as I don't run out of stickers) - will replace these once I fix my scanner, honest to God

older sketchbook scans, mainly playing around with lines, reading Vilppu books, watching saw movies...

2 days on the road. derp!
Hey you're doing a ton of great work, keep that up. The only thing I can say, is in your painter stuff, watch the edges, they are coming out very muddy and soft.

Thank you, Psychobuddy - I seem to have an overall problem with soft edges... I'm guessing it's because I OCD over them too much. Trying to fix that, not sure if successfully![]()
Photoshop/Painter aberration, featuring my boyfriend and his cat. Unsure about the composition, I think I've cropped it weirdly.

'Chicken composition' homework. starting to think I should've just drawn a bowl of soup. Copped out and finished it in Photoshop(initially pencil sketch).
Excellent start for your sketchbook!I enjoy your gestures and makes me want to do a bunch of them again.
Keep drawing everything you think looks cool and try and study as much as you can.
As for painting maybe try and dive really into it think about all the little things your characters might be feeling how they got that way. Helps me anyway to get into a painting.
have a good one hopefully I said something that will be useful

Many thanks, Jamie! I have to admit, doing 'gestures' and 'studies' is basically a 180 from my usual habits. I'm always very close to ragequitting every time I go out for observation drawings, but I'm trying to soldier on (cause it seems to work wonders for other people, and I'm somewhat in need of wonders right now).
Same for the thinking part on the imagination drawings. I tend to draw in a state of semi-awareness most of the time, more or less drawing automatically while polishing the idea in my head - does that even make sense?
Anyway, will try to do this 'thinking' thing you mentioned. See how it plays out. Cheers!
herp derp, studies. Studies?

Hello hello!
Nice to catch you back and see some of your works! I really like the one with the burnt wings
I think the figure studies and the rendering are the most useful things and they really show your progress!
