I... seriously don't understand what's supposed to be so terrible about that particular thread...? I mean... It's a perfectly ordinary thread? OP asks a fairly straightforward question, gets at least three posts with quite helpful links and advice, a couple of pieces of uncertain or flippant advice, a bit of casual chit-chat sprinkled around...

I see nothing even remotely hostile or trollish there except your own comments, frankly.

I don't see how you can object to people having casual chit-chat and straying from the topic, if that's your problem. This is a forum. It's social. People chat. We're not teachers standing in front of a class being paid by the hour to focus exclusively on giving advice. We want to have fun, too.

Im a bit zombied out but some of them are fucking good movies. The 80s one in the mall is a strange quiet oddball movie that works really well I think. Im a giant fan of 70s and 80s films in that style. All silence and shoes clopping on the floors and th occiasional Lalo Shifren type noises. Dirty Harry, Invasion of the Bodysnatchers, Dawn of the Dead, Day of The Dead, The Evil Dead, Assault on P13, The Thing, you know the ones. Class action.

Please if you mention anything classic and zombie "Night of the Living Dead" is the godfather. The worst thing that happened to George Romero was getting money to make movies and having digital special effects to work with. Night will rule forever. Having said that I agree with you about 70s and 80s films. And Romero's Dawn and Day were great movies with perfect camp and social commentary.

George Romero has been on an unfortunate downward slope since The Dark Half (which did have some fun moments). Land of the Dead was entertaining and I liked some of the concepts, but to put it up against even Day of the Dead was difficult. It's amazing what he did was such small budget in the 60s and 70s, but these days all of his low-budget offerings (Diary and Survival of the Dead) are filled to the brim with awful CGI and miserable actors. I love his classic moves (and not just the zombie ones...Martin and The Crazies are two of my favorite movies ever), but I desperately wish he would retire from movies.

If you guys have not seen movies by Lucio Fulci, I highly recommend them.
The Beyond, Gates Of Hell (aka City of the Living dead), House by the Cemetary, and Zombi 2 are simply some of the best horror movies of the early 80s. There is a cheese factor, definitely. And they are dubbed (because they are Italian...and all Italian horror from that time period was dubbed), but if you can watch them with an open mind you realize just how incredibly brutal and disturbing they are. Some of the goriest, nastiest moments from horror history come from those movies (and not in the "oh...this is just excessive toture porn nonsense like today's flicks).

I find pseudoscience an interesting phenomenon. I think you are right: it is to some extent an attempt to inject more wonder into the universe, and it is strange considering the universe is already plenty wonderful. I notice though that they often have a very poor understanding of what conventional science actually says, thus many of their arguments amount to burning straw men. There is often also a generous dollop of paranoia involved, which I think goes hand in hand with a martyr complex. But of course, it is NICE to be a martyr, to be in some sense "special." They can then feel like a small elite who know the truth.

That's my contribution to pop psychology. I have been hanging around on anti-creationism mailing lists for years, so I have long experience with pseudoscience nuts. In fact, I probably deserve the title of autodidactical doctor of psychology. :-)

As for the complaints about the direction this thread took, I can see where Izi is coming from, but I must respectfully disagree. I would rather err on the side of free speech. I am almost always upset about something. The posters in the sketchbook forum are generally very respectful, considerate and helpful. If the OP's main intent really is to share art and commune with kindred artists, that's where he should be. His secondary motive seems to be getting respect from people for things OTHER than art, and nobody has to pander to that here. Just because the guy's such an easy target doesn't make him innocent. I think he said some pretty vicious stuff on the first page.

Zombies are both dead and alive. In this respect they resemble Schrödinger's cat, and as such I would think that guy with a Ph.D. in physics may well have some very interesting insights about them to share.

Doc, I don't have any kind of Ph.D. As I mentioned before, I'm slow on the uptake. Like there's a layer of supercooled helium choking what passes for my brain. We had a schizophrenic guy living in the house for a while, and until he stopped taking his meds he was an OK guy. Quiet, worked regular hours. After he stop popping his pills and refused to take them any more, and threatened to murder the landlord and the police took him away he was a lot like the Doc here. Delusions radically at odds with reality, confused scrambled thoughts, threats of violence and retribution by powerful unseen agencies, its all exactly the same. Played Heavy Fuel by Dire Straights 7 times in themiddle of the night (what a tune that is tho!) Dim the lights, and if you dare, join me in The Twilight Zone..

The house where i live is kind of like the house in Hey Arnold. Its really cheap and there's all sorts of poor but lovely immigrant types living here, like multiple Chinese in one room, an old rasta claus, some Nigerians, some romanian lads, etc etc. I like it a lot. One of the people a is 40-something french algerian with some brilliant kind of brain damage. He talks constantly and often angrily to people who arn't there, refers to himself in the third person, has a fascination with mirrors, (more on that in a sec) and claims to have done 12 years in a Spanish prison after being framed up for a knife robbery he didn't commit. Massive scars on his face. Cool right? Convinced that if he sends enough emails to Barack Obama he will have his family's stolen fortune returned to him he once sent a load of emails full of crazy threats and Islamic names to the FBI and the CIA from my computer. I expect a drone strike is imminent. The other day he filled up the Henry hoover with water and left it outside till someone stole it and then accused us of framing him for it. The same day he also filled up all these bottles and threw them on the roof. Isn't he great!?


He absolutely loves a mirror, but they must never face him. When he comes home from work (he works in Jamie Olivers italian in Cambridge centre) he spends his time fixing up his room, noisily moving items about until all his junk is looking perfect. But his absolute favourite activity is to sellotape all the shiny mirror surfaces he can to his windows. He explained to me this is a lot like CCTV and he can make sure no one is invading the property or making a nuisance of themselves. In the middle of the image is a bean can lid. These mirrors periodically fall off and smash and he puts the glass in the toilet.


Here is one of thecryptic messages Fares sent from my email to the US Department of Justice, the FBI, the CIA and many others. he cant write so good so instructed me to write DRINK GRANDMOM ZERRKA and 40 AVENUE CARNO EL BEER on them, just to clear up any confusion.
I looked up avenue carnot in el bier, algiers, but the building he insisted belonged to him was now a bank.


This one was sent to the european court of human rights, without any explanation. when I asked what he hoped would happen, he assured me with a just you wait grin that they would soon return to him the vast wealth the swiss government was holding for him. i showed him that the swiss banks would run a check for any unclaimed accounts for 60euros and offered to stump the money if he could provide his fathers passport and death certificate but he said they were lost in the mists of time. Just got to keep sending these emails, he says.

I wrote to the universities he insisted his father had worked at, but the records departments could find no mention of him. It seemed like a good lead but it went nowhere in the end.

Shouted he was never going to leave, would stab us and the land lord if anyone tried to remove him.
