    village

    critique pls

dude i just wanna say i am feeling more comfortable with perspective i sucked so hard at it before but then i observe more and i think i got better

also i dont use any ref for this because i think its boring to do copying from something so i make it 100% from my head so its all from memory

At the moment it's confusing and hard to read since you did everything with a little (and low opacity) brush. you should try to start with big and simpel shapes in the beginning and then add detail later on.

i also think there are some issues with the perspective...but thats hard to tell because of the first point i made.

and using reference is not going to hurt

    i started with simple shapes!

i did the whole abstract to control thing!

but i always had problem with the opacity i use ppen pressure but i pressed hard and it still comes out light and when i choose brighter color it gets too bright and i wanna keep the houses looking old and dirtyy

maybe i make the houses in the front little darker brown than the ones in the back???? i feel so confussed

Use bigger brushes, and map out the perspective. Right now, everything beyond the Caribbean-looking structures up front looks like stacks of horizontal lines. Use the larger brushes to put the shapes in rather than relying on scratchy thin lines. It'll even out the values quite a bit as well.

Yeah don't brag about not using ref it shows your lack of commitment to improve. Use reference. The whole thing is a mess with no consistent lighting or perspective, no center of focus. Learn to copy first until you can do it perfectly then learn to work from life until you can translate then maybe you can try and make stuff up but until then things like this are a waste of your time.

I think you’re trying to put too much emphasis on a specific technique, and don’t understand the purpose of reference.
Let’s look at a couple of images.

    http://www.sandiegohistory.org/socie...croftranch.jpg

In the first one let’s look at the roof support poles. Notice how they connect to the roof? There’s a sort of white surface directly below the shingles. Now, if you were a slave to the image, and copied this exactly as it is, it wouldn’t really matter what this particular piece is, but if you were trying to understand its purpose and design, you’d need more than just this picture. Open up the next image.

This isn’t the same house, but that doesn’t really matter. What we’re looking for is design and shapes that we can memorize, and use so that we can build our own house from our mind.

Notice how that white surface below the house is actually a type of beam that is no wider than the supports. Notice how far the roof extends past this beam, and how it extends at an angle. These are details that you wouldn’t have been able to see just by looking at the first image.

Using lots of reference is required for every painting. It’s not an optional feature.

Also, for your perspective problems. Use a horizon line, and a vanishing point with parallel lines going to the vanishing point. It's not that hard.
