    Jade's Book

    Hey everyone,

Here are some sketches, I have loads of them but I'm not too familiar with CA's uploading system so these are just a few to get started! Most of them are rough preliminary sketches or studies for larger projects, hopefully I can upload more a little later!

    Thanks for looking!

PhilipO - Thank you very much for the reply! It's very encouraging and hopefully I'll be able to get more uploaded, CA doesn't seem to be cooperating today

Cheboboh - Thanks! Hopefully I'll venture over to the finally finished section with some illustrations!

Lovely work on those tiger sketches! The pencil work in the first one is especially great. It would be nice if you incorporated the lines and textures you have in your traditional work in your digital pieces, I think it would make for a stronger image. Keep up it up!

Thanks for the reply Rustveld! Usually after I'm done with an image in painter I pop it into photoshop to add textures

Here's another unfinished digital one. I lost motivation for completing the picture a while ago/got off track on where it was going. Started in Photoshop, ended in Painter.

Good LORD, woman! Work of this quality is what I aspire to be like, since I draw big cats all the time! Quick question, what basic shapes do you break the head and snout into when you draw big cats?

Hi Skitters, thanks so much for the lovely comment! When I draw large cats, I try to use a variety of curves and straight lines to get the shape of the jaw and head before I start drawing. Here are some really bad drawings to sort of show how I start (my apologies, they were drawn in photoshop and I'm not use to sketching digitally!) And one finished sketch.

I'll use the circle shape for the head and then straight, more angular lines to map out the fur. I suggest finding pictures to reference where the face is very prominent without a lot of fur because it will help you find where the bones are, and then you can draw the fur on top of the bones after you have the shape As for the jaw, I usually use circles to map out basic shapes

Wow, this is a top rate sketchbook! Seeing how you carried over your knowledge of cat anatomy and how they carry themselves onto that dragon in post #8 is interesting.

How often do you draw cats from life versus from photos?

Thank you for the lovely comment! There is a large cat zoo right by my house, I will sketch them from there or take reference photos, probably more photo reference at this time because it's often raining and there's no cover

Your last wolves sketch is absolutely gorgeous. I wish I could say more, but I can't, because it blown my mind away. And tiger head is also fantastic.
I mainly see human anatomy and figure studies here in sketchbooks, your animals are great fresh breeze. Keep posting more, I will be watching you

That's so cool. My zoo only has a few snow leopards, which can be fun to draw but I've always wanted to see a tiger or lion. You certainly do them justice.

Thank you all so much for the kind words, it's really encouraging! I do love drawing animals, especially cats, it's always so relaxing for me to start off the day with some kitty sketches. I'm also a huge Wendling fan, she really sparked my love of drawing large cats
