My rendering is pretty bad so I've been practicing off some mma reference pics.

As far as rendering is concerned, the key is to pick a light source and to stick to it. Remember, you're not drawing/painting the object, but how light falls on the object. Try to understand the underlying planes on the objects, that will help you grasp how much (or how little) light is able to hit the object at hand.

For now, just keep practicing, and while at it, try to retain as much as possible. Keep going!

When rendering I try to see the shape I want, then recreate it myself. Maybe I will try to break it down into planes to make it easier.
Here's a few more from today.

Hey, welcome to CA. This is a good start to your SB. I think some construction exercises would help to add more form to your paintings/drawings.

This is probably true since I've been tiptoeing around it. I recently started Michael Hampton - Figure Drawing - Design and Invention and hope something will click.

It's funny I remember skimming through Loomis a year or so ago and now I have returned him recently. I've been considering the structure and form when approaching new paintings. I'm wondering if it shows.

Really nice stuff, I dig your pencil sketches and studies, remarkable! Your digitals aren't as good as your traditional work, but damn, your style, shading and linework kick ass!!

Cool sketchbook! You seem to have a very good grasp of skin tone - I can see a big improvement in your linework and lighting - you might want to work on landscapes a bit...maybe do some more studies.

    keep practicing and keep posting!

It's hard to decide what to study with limited time. I know I need to work on landscapes. Perhaps I should devote a solid week to them.

Here's some latest scans from my sketchbook.

Cool stuff. I like the rendering on those tentacle things!
Yah...I know...there's always too much too learn and too little time. It seems like you're making some progress drawing those human type people, but it could still use some improvement. I would maybe recommend doing landscapes for a bit and coming back to this...or don't...I don't know...just do what you think is most helpful I guess...but improving in one might give you new insight into the other...maybe.

THIS IS SO TRUE! When focusing in one area, something reveals itself in another, or becomes clearer, cleaner, crisper. I noticed when I really tried to keep my shading clean and creating a smooth transition my lines in general became more smooth and more confident.

Here's a mass landscape sketch. I think I deliberately chose shitty images. I think I'll do another but pick some sexy clean images.

Big improvements on pretty much everything! The colors in your landscapes are very good- especially the forest. Try to take some clean edges into your landscapes and some soft edges into your portraits.

I'm seeing improvement! Your paintings have really started to fill in!

The big thing I'm noticing is just that you seem to be doing a lot of photo studies and working from flat/2D sources. Have you tried any life drawing recently? My recommendation would be to take your sketchbook and just draw stuff around your home. Or, if you're feeling particularly adventuresome, go outside and draw a bit! It really doesn't matter what. What it should do is help to help you with depth and lighting.

    Good luck!

I haven't done a life drawing in quite some time. I should do one.
