Hey, im 17 too, and its not neccessary to go to an art school, but if you dont, you need to spend a lot of time drawing and painting, just like youd do in an art school

. your lines are lose, i really like that

your anatomy is a bit off, but you cant easily improve on that by drawing from life and reading anatomy books

In your position you need to be drawing more then you want to breath. Draw, draw, draw, draw and draw. If you need help on what to draw try starting with any object in your bedroom. Take photo's and replicate, draw your self in a mirror. Study anatomy books... figure out a way to use color... looks like you have some water colors that is great! Practice practice practice till your practice turns into play. Then you start having a lot of fun creating because you can create what is inside of your mind. In a way all artist are parents and have millions of children because each of our drawings are our own unique creations.

I like your loose lines as well. Signs of a good painter. Keeps playing and having fun.

I would like to know how to begin studying painting. just a lot of painting or read some book? and exercise to practice?
So is it worth buying a tablet now? or drawing on paper?

Dont make any promises. It hurts your self when you cant live up to your own words. Just take each day at a time and do the best you can at that time.

Bruce Lee always helped me stay motivated. He said, "Knowing is not enough we must apply, willing is not enough we must do." Learn as much as you can and apply it dont just study it and move on actually use what you have learned over and over till it becomes second nature! Actions speak louder then words... just do it. You will thank your self later.

Just keep working hard and posting new sketches. Never stop. Try to reach a full page of sketches before the end of this week!

As for buying a tablet- if you have money to spare, a tablet is always a handy tool to have. But drawing with pen/pencil on paper will be probably easier for now (you can do it anywhere, you see the lines you're making, you are probably used to using pencil etc.)

Keep going. Just keep sketching. Just close your mind to the world, and get lost in your pencil/paper for as long as you can.

Get any of the Loomis books you can afford and absorb everything they have. If/when you become interested in color/paints, pick up James Gurney's "Color and Light". It's seriously like the Holy Grail of beginner's painting books. He explains things in such simplistic ways, that it makes it difficult to NOT get what he is saying.

Its a good start that you want to be good at drawing, that's enough motivation for now. My suggestion would be, for shading, instead of smudging, try hatching. It's much difficult but it looks way better. Try copying from magazines. That's what our professor told us to do when I was in school. (until you get familiarized with the human proportion). that's it for now.

Try not to be so desperate man, instead of bumping just bump with more artwork. You can't instantly be great, there's nothing that anyone can say that will make you become great. The only way you can be great is if you work at it. Just draw draw draw and don't stop learning. I suggest trying to look for these books and buy them. Draw everything in them and learn as much as you can.
