IOW #35 - Sergio Toppi Tribute - Extended Deadline

Illustration of the Week #35: Sergio Toppi Tribute

This is a two week topic.

    Topic
This weeks topic is Sergio Toppi Tribute.

This past week saw the death of artist Sergio Toppi. Toppi was incredibly influential and produced a number of stunning artwork throughout his life. Your task is to make a tribute piece--the topic is open, but it must pay tribute to Toppi in some way (done in a style reminiscent of his, perhaps similar subject matter etc). If you are unaware of who Toppi is, then this is a great chance to familiarize yourself with a master, and if you already were a fan of Toppi then you should have lots of ideas swimming in your head of what you want to do

I suggest looking through a lot of his art... here is one of his comics to start you off:

    Deadline

THE DEADLINE IS EXTENDED TO SUNDAY THE 30TH OF SEPTEMBER, 23:59 GMT

Sweet!! This is my first time EVER on participating on ANY kind of art challenge online so this is a perfect way to kick off my self-teaching art training before I start my Illustration major at UHart in this coming spring . I find that discovering new artists and exploring their techniques is a great way to grow and improve one's skills, especially if it's an artist outside of one's comfort zone. This is my first WIP. I am also diligently trying to improve my digital art skills. To challenge myself, I am using Corel Painter 11 and it's wonderful array of pen brushes. Lay it all out, I am practically a sponge when it comes to dealing with criticism and constructive criticism towards my artwork

Here's where I'm at. I feel like I'm in the ballpark. Even if I'm just at the bar drinking instead of playing, or even watching the game.

Need to finish the foreground version of the dude. Then do some cleanup and add background garnishment.

    My WIP

    Hello everyone,

I am posting my WIP, which is basically a very rough pencil draft. Sorry about the bad scan, the pencil is really light. I will ink it in next, will upload another WIP in the middle. I have tried to stay true to Sergio Toppi's unique style, which is the biggest influence in my art. So this is a tribute to him from all my heart. Sorry about the blabbing...but he is my biggest inspiration.

Some words about the submissions so far

CrimsonX89 - Congratulations on your first attempt, I can imagine the nervousness, coz I joined this community a few months back myself. I think you are on the right track with your piece. Toppi was all about creating forms with lines and a lot of black. So your piece can look really good if you add that complexity, while bringing out the female form.

Dcritelli - You have a very cool concept, and I love the whole idea of showing the transformation like this. I would suggest that instead of putting a solid black or white between the three figures, if you could use lines to somehow connect them, indicating the flow, it would look really awesome.Similarly for the black, if you could somehow show them emerging from the background black, with lines, it will add a lot more depth to your piece.

Of course these are just my opinions so please feel free to ignore them ..

    My submission

I don't really know what the status of this challenge is, but since I completed my piece that day itself, I thought I'll share it here... Name: ToppiTribute_800h.png

Thanks everyone for staying interested and posting up some really great art!

I would like to apologize to everyone for the confusion in terms of the deadline. The forums seem to be in working order now once again, so we can get this underway. In order for everyone to have time to see that this is up and running, and for those that didn't see the topic due to the forums being down, I have extended the deadline for another week.

Once again, my apologies for the delay in this!

Hello, thanks for extending the deadline.
I had never heard of Sergio Toppi but I'm now a fan of his style!
    Here's my attempt.
The first image is the final, the rest are the W.I.P's.
