Erik Ly's Super art painting sketching adventure

    Name: icon.gif

Size: 984.4 KBHello Everyone! I've been looking around this website for a while now, but I never actually posted anything. My name is Erik Ly and I am 19 years old. I went to Laguna College of Art and Design for two years in the Gameart program, but I left the program this year for personal reasons. Now I'm trying to be a lot more self motivated and improve on my own, so I would really like everyone's critiques

    11/16/2012 - I am now 20

If you would like to see a lot more of my work and myself please visit my blog
    HERE

I'll do my best to post very frequently! :j

Hey man! you've got some really wicked concepts here, really cool man, everything seems to be good , the only advide i'd give is for you to study facial structure a bit more? it seems like the facial lines are lacking in lof of your work, but everything else is just fine, colors, composition, imagination etc!
    keep it coming!

hey dude, nice studies!! keep doing those, they are paying off big time! i think you have a good grasp on where your at, and are working towards correcting your weaknesses (studying faces, anatomy, those hand studies are awesome btw!) but just keep at it, i know it can feel slow going, but i got a feeling youll be cranking out some bangin work in no time!

Looks like you've been working hard, one thing I would suggest is to slow down with some of the pieces and give them some more love. A lot of your stuff looks like you are trying to break the speed record and therefore looks a bit messy.
That's still cool, but maybe set yourself up a small corner with some objects with different types of materials as well as some interesting lighting and draw/paint that. (ceramics, glass, metal, cloth)

This will give you better understanding of light and colour in general.

    cheers

awesome start : D i love the one with the fire/ cigarette. also like fireblade said your paintings look kind of rushed? so try to put more time into one and sometimes it's more effective learning-wise compared to rushing through paintings. good job with the studies though c:

Head paintings 30 - 35 minutes each. The first and last faces are from imagination. The other painting was inspired by Anthony Jones

Hey guys! Here is a character concept I've been working on. The original idea was to kind of blend knights with modern day formal apparel. I've been told it looks very steam punk, which I'm actually okay with. I still need to design his weapon which would be a rapier. That was the reason why I gave him one armored arm. It is a little silly, but I'd love to hear what you all think!

These drawings are great! I love the concepts you have, especially the grey guy with the big armor. Two things that you might want to take a closer look at in your work are: 1) Your edges. They are often overly blurred or sharpened, which disconnects your figures from the space/lighting you want to convey. 2) The way you position your figures. Your figures tend to look a little stiff, and I think it's because the spine/shoulders/hips aren't lined up quite right. If you do some gesture drawing it might help to loosen up your figures. You have a great body of work here, keep it up!

I painted something for my parents for once. It was hard, getting them to look like themselves in the beginning haha. I was really trying to play with the cool blue coming from the left and the warm light coming from the right.

To Rhubix: Thanks! I will keep on trying to do the right things haha :]

Dude you're kicking some serious ass with those studies, and I especially love that mech dude in post #18!!! I can't critique much since you're way ahead of me but those bridgeman arm studies rock! I'm trying to get those down right now too but my line quality sucks xD Keep posting!! I expect to see some crazy stuff from you
I swear one day I'll be good. I swear one day I will be proud of my work. When that day comes, I'll need to kick my ass and try harder.

Wow she's great! And I love your studies, nice work. Sometimes you gotta just work things till they're done, even if it takes longer than you expected. Gotta do that to learn how to paint detail

@Caseylarae Thanks buddy! yeah on my last one I specifically timed myself, but next time I'll do a painting and take as long as I need to get those details in :]

I usually pen sketch right when I wake up, but today I decided to start my morning off digitally

A random doodle I did after I got fired from my job.

    A painting for my friend.
