As i had understood the setting is modern, sci-fi but with some anachronism and fantasy elements, kinda what FF games do. With tech powered by magic energy and stuff like that. Ancient cultures jumping to futuristic setting.

Is with that idea in mind that i´m sketching also, i think that elements are going to clash if the characters look too traditional fantasy-like.

I at least will try to do an enviro, because i so never do them

Well, I put googles and and a sort of techy glove on my character, but also tried to keep it slightly anachronistic, I guess? The way I'm imagining it is sort of steam punk but without the steam... and more glowy stuff.

As for the panels, maybe we could all collaborate on them? Like we do a page each or something. I think that could be fun

The way I see this working is for everyone to take ownership of one of the aspects and then we each do our own page for the panels like Tobba said.
Who ever does the illustration (it'll be our comic cover) should also do the last page of the panels for climax and continuity.

Yeah, it does seem we like fantasy we're probably gonna have to scifi things up a little once we see what all of the elements look like. Then we can adapt things for a more consistent design scope.

I can do any of those, at least there is time for extra work if it is a difficult subject, though if it is to pick one thing each i´d say an enviro is the one thing that i would find the hardest to do a good job at.

We've got time still to decide who does what. I think maybe we should all just keep dumping concepts in here for another week, but after that we'll have to start rendering.

Maybe everyone could list their preference scale. From first choice down to fifth.

Mine would be (in decending order):
1. Illustration
2. Character
3. Enviromental
4. Creature
5. Industrial

But I don't have my heart set on this -- I'll be happy to do whichever nobody else wants.

Actually worked some more on another character design. I figure the dictator might also be an empress...

tobbA: I'm fine with you doing the character. I think the last one has potential; however I think the guy with the power glove fits in our world better. He is the one I'd personally like to see developed further. I'm thinking that he could be tech'd up some and maybe give him a pair of power gloves. The Riddick look that he has going for him could be pushed a little more.

Well I've been trying my hand at the enviroment. This kind of work is not really my forte, but I enjoy pushing my boundries. This is still in the idea stage and very rough.

Here's where I'm at with the character for the moment.



So I'm thinking he starts out as some kind of low ranking officer in the emperor/dictators army, but after a while realizes what he's doing is wrong. Before he escapes he steals the prototype 'power clothing' consisting of the gloves, boots and shirt which help increase his physical abilities. He then proceeds to become a masked vigilante character who fights against the emperors opression. He calls himself "The Guardian" based on an old legend about a god being who is said to have been protecting the land from harm.

Nice work! I think this guy is about ready to render. The only real design suggestion I have is the vest could use more of an armoured look to it. Also when you do the character sheet he'll probably need to be shown without the cloak for the back view.

I'm currently still working on refining the enviroment and coming up with a script for the panels.

only thing i would add to the environment is somethihng that would suggest scale i dont maybe a little park in the bottom right area where that capital is maybe a tree

penciltipred: Yeah you're right about the park idea it seemed to help, also I extended the horizon line cause it was a little low.

JDSart: Before I get too far on the enviroment idea I'm working on, I just want to check to see what you had in mind to work on enviroment or illustration? I don't want to step on anyone's toes so I'm checking to see which one you'd prefer to do. I think I've wrapped my mind around the enviroment finally so I'm ok with doing either.

Since last friday i don´t have a phone line nor internet access at home. Some goverment assholes went to the building to fix something, they screwed it harder, pretended like it was damaged all along and now they only scheduled a new repair for august 10 because they have some serious balls.

Shorinji, If you like to continue with the enviro then i´m fine doing the illustration. Would be good to be clear on what elements are going to be included, so i can start on it ASAP. and hopefully have that settled so what´s left is just rendering.

Tobba.
I would play with the cape a bit more. looks moslty ornamental now but he could use it for cloaking, protection from the enviroment, etc. Since his design is parting from an uniform, that could be the element that adds some assimetry to the outfit. He could be carrying provisions under there, hidden weapons, ammo.

Shorinji. I think the main structure´s scale could be pushed more in proportion to everything else. And add more use of back, front and middle planes to give more depth to the landscape.

I've been trying to work out the script for the panels, but I realized that we don't really know what everyone has developed for the story. I know we talked about the creatures and industrial design; however without really knowing what the state of the ideas are we're at a stopping point for the illustration and the panels.

What we need is for everyone who hasn't posted a statis report to check-in and give us a preview so that we can coordinate the rest of the challenge and bring all of the pieces together.

JDSart: Sounds like a pain losing your internet. It is hard to remember sometimes what life was like before being connected, and I was an adult at the time. Sanity will return, just as soon as they fix it.

Yeah you're right about the depth of field. I moved the horizon line and extended the city, but I think I'm gonna extend the canvas some to emphasize the scale more.

Since you are working on the illustration maybe we should limit the panels to 4 pages to give you the time that you need to concentrate on a killer illustration?.. that way those of us doing the designs can handle the panels and everything will kind of even out as far as work load go.

I was left out once for over a month, i can do without for most things but its sucks like hell to be incomunicated when you actually need to.
At least i can log in the mornings until friday.


I think it depends how are we planning to do the pages.
Black and white, flat color, smooth color, crosshatching, greyscale, tones?

Is everyone adding their own style to each page? or are we adhering to something? I´ll put some quick tests tomorrow and ideas for the illu.
Is been slow these last few days but Friday is my last day in this job so i´ll get right to it.

If youy guys have examples, ideas for the look of the comic, technique, style. lets start sharing some of that.

I'm thinking the panels would be in each of our own styles. I would like to do mine in the color painted style that I use for my illustrations just because it's faster for me. I think we need the pages to be between 3-5panels long. We should concentrate on a single scene. Something like the character fighting the mech?.. or the first time the character turns against the corperation?.. A dissection of the creature to remove its energy source?.. Ideas anyone?

It would be too hard to conform styles this late into it. I know everybody is pretty busy, but I think we have all done pretty well so far staying on track with this. We're only three pages in, and we have everything assigned and we're almost ready to render. That gives us each about 2 weeks to polish our work.

Yeah. I think it'll be cool if we all just do our own thing for the pages, following a script. I think 4-6 panels per page is quite standard in comics. Also... Can I write the script?

Here's some progress on the character. And yeah. I'm not super happy with the cape. I'm at least going to need to get some decent reference for it... I'm thinking the main purpose of the cape is simply to hide his identity when he needs it. It's not actually part of the uniform per se.

tobbA: As far as I'm concerned, if you want to write the script it's yours! I like the progress you've made on the character. I think it has a lot of potential. Do you mind if I try my hand at a paintover? I have a couple of ideas I'd like to try. It would be easier to show than discribe, but I definately don't want to offend anyone.

Thanks tobbA! This is kind of what I meant about the armoured vest. I also tried my hand at the cloak. Sorry if this is a little messy I was trying to gritty it up a touch. There is a alot of the original design that I really liked, but that didn't stop me from expreimenting a little. Anyway feel free to use or discard as you see fit.

Playing a little, the quickest approach to the comic for me would be kinda like this. But i really want to have the illustration planned out before thinking of the page.

Seriously though, if we are each doing the comic page in our own style, go for it. We just need to make sure that we don't deviate too far from the the design sheets.
