    Gur Ghen's Sketchbook

    Hey Concept-Art.org,

I am Gur Ghen (23) and have been following concept-art.org for a while now. After waiting for a long time... finally: here is my sketchbook! I am going to use it for studies, sketches and other works (not older than 24 hours). Feel free to critique and to help me improving myself! That's the whole point of this thread, I guess

    Some info:
Because of my studies (Intermedia Design, Germany) I have enough freedom to structure my projects/classes pretty unrestricted. Right now there are 3 bigger ones. Because of the fact that all three have different subjects (animals, insects, creatures, architecture and vehicles) I am going to do a lot of studies. Aside from that I just started to draw digitally again so there are going to be some color-studies too.

    Thanks in advance!
    Gur Ghen

So here are the first pictures. (Some duck-related studies and creature sketches).

    Heya,

thanks a lot! I really enjoy it here It's very motivating to see all the other sketchbooks and the individual progresses of all the different artists.

Sooooo today it's duck time again

But at first I would like to give you some information about my current project (at least the one for which I am drawing the ducks ).

During the next few weeks I am going to visualize the fairy tale "The Two Travellers" by The Brothers Grimm. Right now I am drawing the creature versions of all the main animals. After that I am going to do the same once more, but instead of the "evil" look I will try to create cute versions of the same animals. Actually not only the animals, but also the main characters and the environments are going to have both versions: a dark and a more good-natured one. The difficult part is: both versions have to be able to exist together in the same universe (for example: I am not allowed to do a creature version as seen above and a "cute" version in comic style). I am pretty excited to see the final results

So now the pictures from today:

1-3: Some more duck, ducklings and general bird-muscles studies.

4: The latest version of the creature-duck.
It does not fly and is more or less featherles. The evil duck runs very fast and attacks other animals with its claws and mouth/tongue (the bill is made of three parts by the way).

    5: Creature-duck-head (function of the 3-part-bill)

    6: Ducklings.
I love it how some spider species collect their cute little babies on their bodies. So I tried to come up with something similar to that. The ducklings have very short bills. But their tongue is very long. They jump on the back of their beloved evil-mom-duck and stick their tongues into the holes on her body. Actually that's the way how they are being fed. With their short bills they can cling to the mother's body and stand still during the feeding and transportation...

7: After a day full of ducks I just wanted to do something else

    Next update:

    no ducks

this time just some human body studies/nude paintings (from fotos). I have to do some character designs during the next weeks so I thought should get warm for that. and: In my opinion one can not do enough human anatomy/body studies...

Awesome duck stuff. Kind of creepy but very cool too. You did a good job on the figures as well. Keep it up! I look forward to seeing more.

    Let's upload some stuff!

JiR, twilightmoon777 and Kishire: thanks a lot! It's very motivating to see comments like yours just before uploading some new stuff! I am glad that you liked my ducks haha Am sure they are quite happy

    @Kishire:
I actually don't know how long the studies took. These are studies, which I did as a warm up before drawing/sketching something else. I always try to do some human body studies if it's possible. But I guess i did them in 15-20min.

    New uploads:
1-2) More human body studies (photo ref)
3-4) Always wanted to do some actual muscle studies for the legs, so I tried to combine that wish with one of my actual projects. I have to design a suit for an astronaut (geologist) on the moon. The poor worker should have some nice boots I think. So I did the studies to understand how the leg-musles work and to use that knowledge for the actual boots. I hope to have them done tomorrow.

Good God those Zombie ducks are freaking the hell out of me. Really nice idea, I've never thought about a zombified duck. Your grasp on anatomy looks very good.

All I could suggest is step it up by adding values to you studies and drawings perhaps.

@Jonesoda:thanks a lot for your advise. It's totally true: i have to do value stuff! Somehow, during the last weeks, I managed to ignore that part completely...

@knocknoc: Awesome post! I'm glad you liked my sketchbook Feel free to visit anytime!

So I was listening to Marko Djurdjevic on Crimson Conversations during the last hours and was sketching around and doing some studies.

If you don't know what Crimson Conversations ist, I would recommend to check it out as soon as possible! I hope I am allowed to post the link here (the first part has an audio issue. The second part is fixed):

Marko Djurdjevic, Crimson Converstations Part 1

    Enjoy!

    Gur Ghen

ps: it's really nice to be forced to see your own posted sketches and studies here. I am descovering more and more mistakes every time I have to post something new... I love it!

    Hey folks!

After a (too) long brake I finally can update my thread again. I have to admit, that the reason for me being so passive during the last weeks was the fact that I somehow couldn't push myself to draw... after the first weeks (where I actually did not have any time for practicing) I just couldn't start again... It was some kind of a lazy-attack I finally managed to resume my animal-creature-project yesterday. So one can say I'm cured again! And because of the lost weeks I have to be very productive the coming days.

So here are some horse-studies and a few sketches from yesterday and today. Looking forward to implementing all the knowledge ( I gained from the studies ) tomorrow.

@Ralvar: thanks a lot! Jap...I'm excited to see the color-versions as well Definitely not my comfort-zone. I have to change that!
@AllyAlbon: haha thanks Zombiehorses are coming!

    greets!

    Gur Ghen

Uhh I see you have been using Marshal Vandruff Animal Anatomy?
I just watched that today, absolutely awesome. Your studies encourage me to do the same.

You're off to such a nice sketchbook imho. I like you pencils and the fact that you always try something from you mind after completing studies. Keep at it, you're so good!

    @LordLouis:

    Hey,

yeah! Marshal Vandruff ist just awesome in explaining all the anatomy-related stuff (I'm sure all the other things too...). I just love his DVD. There is SO much information in it that one has to rewatch again and again (at least I'm doing that). The only thin I hate is: the melodies between the lessions...

Thank you so much for your very nice words! More motivation for tomorrow! Yeah! Thanks again

ps:just checked out your sketchbook. Awesome studies! o_0 love them

    ------------------------------------------

    So folks,

one more update. Once again: studies and skteches from yesterday and today.

    Hey wutangclan,

    thanks

I watched "Marshall Vandruff Animal Anatomy" (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/sto...y#.UHNXZkbE1ms).

It's really awesome and helped a lot! (You can find most of his tutorial_sketches on different blogs and sites if you are not sure if you should get the tutorial or not.)

    I hope I could help

With all due respect to the slaughter-ready ponies, it's the mutant duckling, that stole my heart!
    Or ate it..
Or infected with some really nasty end-of-times virus... 0.0
(The line between cute and downright creepy can sometimes be so thin..)

    Nice sketchbook

    Today's bee update:

Some studies (bees and wasps) to understand why bees are bees and wasps are wasps Learned a lot about these nice insects during the last few days!

After the studies I tried to play a bit with the forms and sizes of the bee/wasp bodies (by sketching small silhouettes). Sadly I didn't manage to use some of the silhouettes jet. The next update will have some!

The last image describes an idea I head dealing with the stinging in general. I guess because of the fact that I love parasites, I had the idea to maybe give my bees/wasps the possibility to sting their victims and leave some kind of a parasite attached to the stinger. That way the parasite can grab on the skin and suck blood through the stinger. The bees don't want the blood...they want the "blood-nectar", which is a kind of bloodplasma produced by the parasite. So the bees will wait the parasite to be full with the plasma and then collect it. For that purpose the parasite indicates the bees that it's "full" and ready to be collected by showing it's (maybe colorful) hair... I'm not sure jet, but maybe I'll let the bees suck the blood-nectar out of the parasite and leave it attached to the victim's skin...That way they could use it more than once...

I had to play with the storks today. So the bees had to wait once again...

A few sketches. The first one shows a clever stork which imitates flowers to trick and attract small birds.
During the "flower-state" the very colorful feathers can be seen. During the normal state they are lying under the normal feathers and are not visible.
