ROUND #266, the pale greeter to the gates of hell

    topic:

ROUND#266, the pale greeter to the gates of hell

    first off, an apology...

there was a bit of a mix up this week with scheduling and that is the reason the new cow topic is a day late. sorry for the delay I'll try not to let it happen again. now onto the new topic...

in keeping with what is turning into a tradition, cow will deal with the concept of hell or demonic creatures every round that ends in 66.

so the idea i came up with is a beast that greets all of the poor souls that have committed sins so heinous in life that they are sent to hell to live out eternity in anguish. placed there by the devil himself, this pale greeter beast should appear so vile and startlingly evil that the toughest souls would scream in terror at the sight of it.

    think disgusting + extremely threatening.
in other words, show us the most terrifying beast you can think of.

    requirements this week...

    - the creature must appear disgusting, and very threatening.

    - the creature must have a pale complexion. almost albino like.

    - no other requirements other than the obvious ones in the rules.

    Deadline:

    July 25th 7:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

    finals go here... http://conceptart.org/forums/showthr...44#post3501644

If I may, I'd like to point Zdzislaw Beksinski's work - especially his paintings from 68 to 83 - as a reference for terrifying things and creatures, even though he works a lot with humanoid forms. You guys probably know him already, this is more of a reminder.

LurkingOrc: Didn't know his work, awesome stuff. Wayne Barlowe might be an obvious reference as well.

Just some quick sketches based off scribbles from a randomized brush to get the creative juices flowing.

    So far I think I'm liking 2, 12, 14, and 15.

The most terrifying beast I can think of? I don't think I have actually ever tried to scrape the very bottom of my terror-barrel. It's a looong way down and I'm afraid of what I may find. But... at the very least, the results should be an interesting exercise in discovering what my own mind is capable of.

    Challenge accepted.

I can not participate just yet but I did find some references of both demonic entities as well as sickly humanoids.

Here are some references guys: http://imgur.com/Ss4U7,JY0AX,ixtHw,B...OD,s81fi,6nRSu

I think greeter is a bit of a misnomer. Guard 'dog' might be a better fit, a greeter sounds too much like a character

So maybe think of something in between, a type of smart monster that ushers people through the gates?

Van Douglas: why can't you participate? don't give us these 'I'm not good enough' excuses!! Hop in and join the fun!!!

some pissing about with silhos...have no idea what to make of the thing in the middle, but the other two look interesting...starting to get an idea inside my head of what sort of monstrosity to make, I started a bit of rendering to refine the idea a bit, but didn't want to get caught up in it too much just yet....first we'll see what other experimentations will yield...

Here is my first draft. I think the final image will be from a more intimidating angle, but this one will be a good reference. I still don't think I quite have the terror level cranked up to 11 though.

I instantly thought of Barlowe's work when i saw this topic. Creepy but amazing art.

Beksinski's stuff seems to be much more surreal but still manages to portray the same feeling. Great inspiration overall.

Bahkana - Great start. Lots of stuff to pick from.

GuesssWho - That makes a lot of sense. Sure helps me clear things up with my designs. They ended up looking too humanoid, which is a against the rules (I know that now), so I had to start over.

Rob Powell - I did that mistake with my first draft. I ended up working almost excusivly on it.
I kind of like the crow-like figure. I think you could make it look really evil and make it show just enough to make the viewer suspect something disgusting is under those wings. Just a thought.

Cloudbreaker - Looking good so far. Interesting combinations. Just be careful not to make it look disfunktional. Everything doesn't have to make sense but it's good to be able to imagine the creature moving around naturally.

Korrdin - Welcome. Looking good. Should be fun to see how it will come together.

I've made some silhouettes, divided into three rows.
Bipeds, quadrupeds and everything in between.
I have no idea which one to choose.
    Might mix some of up.

Lhune - Nice design. I like the idea of the face at the end of the tongue.

Got no idea what I'm doing here so just mashing black and white together till I get something I like.

Christoffer: Both number fives caught my attention the most. The biped looks like something that might exist in the space between realities. Something undoubtedly unnatural. The quadruped just has me going, "What is that?" But in a good way.

Lhune: I don't know what you're talking about. That creature is plenty creepy. I really like that tongue-face. What type of texture are you planning on using for the creature's skin?

Lhune - Anything that resembles a giant serpent is creepy and threatening anough in my book. The mouth could be the focus for whatever disgusting features the creature will have.

Animare - Bottom from the left looks like it could be some arachnid-type creature. Bugs always creep people out.

Cloudbreaker - Thanks. I appreciate that. Will definitely keep that in mind.

Hey there. How's it hangin'? First time here, so I decided to take it slowly and see if it's my cup of tea. Designing new species sure is a mind-twisting subject.
And it's intimidating as hell, being surrounded by mind-blowingly amazing designs in this sub-forum.

My sketch for this topic. I could only stretch my imagination as far as digustin and intimidating are concerned.
Just to clarify: it's a gut collector. among other things.

    Cheers and good luck everyone.

I totally whipped up an idea last night, so stoked to work on it... now if only my pressure sensitivity on my tablet would work :I

Tacijana: Definitely gross and scary, love it.

Christoffer: I agree with cloudbreaker, biped #5 definitely has my interesting peeked, as dones quadraped #1 Lots of interesting silhouettes in general actually.

Rob Powell: Your middle sketch comes across as the scariest, but the bird-esque on the the right really has the "greeter" vibe... Probably due to the somewhat outstretched arms/wings.

In general I'm stoked to see how this round goes, a lot of awesome ideas already forming

Hey everyone~ had some free time this weekend so I thought to join the party! I didn't have too much time to explore different concept so I just went with what I had. I might work on this a bit more later, but not sure how much I can get done during the week!
