it's been a long time since i've done sci-fi .. so it's more of a comeback for me..
i would certainly compare this one with the showstopper; in terms of detail, look and feel ..
done using photoshop cs3, it took almost two and a half months to complete, mainly because of work schedule;
technical -
lots and lots of layer blending, pen tool for the shapes, warping and distortion for reflections, smudging for clean up ( pesky color banding ) dodge and burn tool for few highlights and shadows..
but again, i used various shapes to get specific shadows and highlights..
photoshop loves to eat up memory, for which scratch disk is of major concern, i had to flatten the image three times to add details ..
also, since i use the mouse, creating each and every shape tested my patience to the core. But in the end, it was worth it ...
i hope i nailed the look and feel .. i love sci-fi

Awesome stuff man! you should really get a tablet, it would probably make things a lot easier (I'm just getting one myself, so I'm about to find out if that's really true
I don't use the word "pretty" very often but this is just pretty. I Love the flares, atmosphere, design and rendering. I can see why you had to keep flattening the layers though, poor Photoshop didn't stand a chance. ;]
