Fail 6 and try 7 - Kohgis Sketchbook Adventure

I have always been way too intimidated by this place, but I'm in dire need of improvement, so I've decided to step it up and post here. I am self taught outside a few classes in high school and I have never really given improvement a serious thought. Or rather, I have always thought about it, but now I've decided to act! I want to break out of my dependency on my anime influenced symbols and try to learn things for what they really are. So this is my attempt to learn how to do everything all over again.

I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel, I just want to improve myself.

Critiques are welcome and I need them more than air.

Alright, for my first post, I'll just add some studies from a few days ago.

I've been investing my time into this 30 day Sketch challenge thing as of late. But instead of doing them and letting them sit, I figure some critique would help me much more.

A value study and a color overlay to accompany it. The Overlay is pretty bad, but I just wanted to play around a bit. Admittedly, I haven't done a value study since high school (2009) and I should definitely do more of them.
