Drawings from various projects (new at bottom of thread)

Lately, I only posted on Internet forums when I wanted to pick up some freelance work...it's been a while since I came around for social reasons. Kind of weird, that; I used to post on forums all the time. Guess I was busy, or something. Anyway, I don't have anything interesting to say, so here are some pictures:

    Toad of Toad Hall

...some guy said this toad looks like Jabba the Hutt; I looked him up on Google. Ha, ha; he does.

    Packbawky Hoarder

    Smoke dragon

    Poor daikon

    ...man, I hate using colours.

Man being abused by his snake (ha, ha, ha)

Some pictures from a project for www.eidolon.me (the next few are all from that):

    Name: actor.jpg
Views: 1888
Size: 342.9 KB

Some goofy sketch I drew one day when I was feeling under the weather:

Yeah, that's probably enough, eh? Some of them I already posted on DA, and stuff, but a couple were just posted here. Most of them are from a book about how to draw, or from "The Wind in the Willows," I think, drawn in the last 18 months or so. I wanted to post more newer stuff, but have NDAs on my head.

Does anyone else live in Vancouver, by the way? I used to know a few illustrators from this area, but fell out of touch. Just curious; I won't stalk you if you admit to living here. ;-)

I really like these. while your take on Toad is a particular fave, all the drawings have a great classical/decadent look to them. I see a little bit of Harry Clarke, a little bit of Edward Gorey. I'm afraid the color one does look a little too accidental, but the spontaneous wash idea I think you were going for has promise.

More recent drawing (this one was for fun, which is rare for me; there should be more time for that):

Nice illustrations. It's good to see traditional media out there. You hate using color? Color is a great friend that should be embraced.

I'm not sure if this is in Vancouver but I've met many talented local artists through meetup.com We have a nice drawing & painting group that gets together a few times a month.

bmag - No, I am not going to colour them; they are finished pen & ink illustrations, not sketches for paintings (and also, the ink is not waterproof).

stinky 07 - Well, maybe I shouldn't say I HATE colour...I just hated doing that particular coloured piece. I suddenly got asked to put a coloured piece in an order for several dozen B&W drawings, and spending money on supplies wasn't in the budget. So I dug out some dried-up watercolours from the bottom of my closet, and rubbed them on the paper with my thumb. I felt kind of bad about that, and wasn't overjoyed with the result. Colour itself is not the devil; I just get the feeling of self-loathing from doing sloppy work. (Though, I do prefer to work in B&W--that was why I didn't have any fresher supplies for colouring on hand, or a paintbrush.) Hmm, maybe I shouldn't admit to doing such a thing, in public.... Oh, well. I did. Ha, ha.

Really nice work, man. It is refreshing to see an artist sticking to the black and white drawing and refining them to this point instead of relying completely on digital mediums these days.

Its always nice to see your work Socar. I remember seeing it years ago (sorry, lol) on site I cant even remember. I was new to digital sites and art then, but your work was always fun to see, and still is. youve kept to your style while it has grown. even more detailed with maybe some more energy? anyway, just sayin hi and good to see you again.

Love your delicate and sexy linework.
The slight, soft use of the white for the forms and focus areas is great too.

Classical feel to your art, and that's a damn good thing to me.

Reminds me of an old (and quite dead) swedish illustrator named John Bauer. He worked in colour, but mostly sparingly like here: http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fil:God...ade_pojken.jpg

Oh, yeah, I'm a big fan of John Bauer. Love his trolls. Even though trolls are the worst monsters, really bloodthirsty, he makes them look appealing while still being ugly, like those dogs that are bald all over, except a puff of hair on their heads.

Thanks! I maybe exaggerated a bit, saying I HATE colour; I don't really have such strong feelings about it. I am just more attracted to the look of B&W/greyscale. I tried using bright colours for a long time, when I was trying to get into digital art, but it never quite conveyed the atmosphere I wanted, in the way B&W does. Also, it costs more; I am very, ehh, financially responsible (cheap!).

Now, here is a kinnaree doing a stampy bird dance. It's also for Ryan Durney's "Birds of Lore" book, which will be out soon.
