Concept Art Study Group London, UK

    Hello All,

I have been thinking about starting a Concept Art study group in London for Beginners/Intermediate and of cause the advance artists who would be interested.

There is a lot of clutter out there that makes it difficult for us beginners to understand best practices.

We could meet up often/weekly and just keep tabs, share insight, encourage and help each other to grow. I myself am a beginners but I take it very seriously as my time is limited. I work as a techy during the day and evenings I draw

I like being a 29yr old techy but I'm passionate about concept art and what to learn and grow. In a number of years if I end up in the entertainment design industry I will be happier but if I stay in IT I don't mind just once its creative. I love art and concept art seems to be the girl for me

My friends say am too serious these days If you really want to grow.. Lets do this!

America has all the well established schools and circles and in the UK the community is none existent to my knowledge as I have searched for groups to no real success. Online's good for portfolio's, tutorials but it takes the juices out of learning.

If this kicks off I will create a meetup event. Lets see how this goes.

This is where am at the moment and a brief overview of my goals. It should give you a very good indication of what I am trying to achieve and what we could achieve.

Give me shout on twitter or email and we can talk if you interested.

Hey, just saw this thread and wondered if you got any responses? This is a really good idea. I only have one friend irl who's interested in concept art (and other similar fields) from London. Any ideas how we could root out some more Londoners or even people relatively local? Can't beat being around like minded people after all.

I think we need to somehow find a few more Londoners (they must be out there somewhere haha) and perhaps an event or even just a meetup could materialize from there? I've heard about some free life drawing sessions going on in East London if that's any good?

    Hi Guys,

I got only one response since the post was created. If you are interested in meeting up in London of course that would be nice to talk to like minded people.
When we get a number together we can just arrange to meet up and see how that goes.

    What do you think?

Absolutely! Any luck with finding some more people though? I'm going to game design course interviews over the next couple of months so I'm going to try and finding some more like-minded people in my travels!

I'm absolutely fine about meeting up. May be the group will start with a few people at first but if we are as determined to make it a success as we are at improving our Art, more peops will come along!

We had a group who used to meet on friday afternoons/evenings, mainly at the V&A to draw the sculptures, and some went on to the evening drawing sessions at the Mall Galleries Hesketh Hubbard life-drawing sessions. I'm not sure whether that's still the case as I haven't been able to get to these for quite a while due to other commitments, unfortunately.

I don't know why, but UK people seem remarkably reluctant to meet, in general. I'm friends with a lot of fine art people in the US realism movement, and a lot of them meet up, hang out together, travel considerable distances to do so. Here in the UK it seems much more difficult to spark that sense of community, but I'm very keen to encourage any attempts to do so.

Excuse my horrible lack of activity (haven't updated sketchbook either), are people free next Thursday or Friday? It might be easier if we get as many as can make it together and then pick a regular day & time

    Hey Guys,

Recently I have received a few response from some very interested people whom are keen on getting together. In fact yesterday I met with Patram whose on this thread and boy we had so much to say that we didn't even scratch the surface of our conversation. There was just so much to talk about that the time was just not there.

If anyone's interested in meeting up let me know. I am keen on gleaning ideas and passing on idea also. From the one meeting with Patram, you realise just how little you know and how much of an impact it can have on some else.
Patram had some really good drawings on his sketchbook compared to my bones and technical drawings.

    So lets do this.

I work Monday 9 - 5 like most people but I am ok meeting during the week (evenings) or weekends.

    Hey Sapeleboy

Yeah I met Pat a couple weeks ago and it was like you described, so much discussed without even scratching the surface.

Really glad you started this thread... I was looking for something just like it and that's how we arranged to meet up.

I can meet weekends no probs and evenings I can come into London if that is easiest for most.

Send me a pm and we can arrange something via email with Pat and/or any one else interested

    Hi all

I was just thinking how to start up such as group and decided to do a little forum trawling before committing to setting up a meetup group. I have some good ideas such as deciding on a theme as a group, then developing a piece of work each. This could mean we hire a model to pose for us in costume, visit an area to sketch/photograph for source material, and other ideas such as getting guest artists in to help us develop.

I live and work in a warehouse in Seven Sisters (on the Victoria Line) which we can use for sketch meets etc. My girlfriend teaches circus here so there is potential for people to pose superman style from the equipment we have setup. Perhaps we can have an initial meet and see what other ideas crop up. Sunday evenings are best for me. in fact Sunday 28th April??
