Thought I'd start up one of these as well! I'll start off with some work I did a while ago, and finish off where I'm at now, more or less. I've gotten so much help from people on the forum 'til now, so big up to all of you! It's been great so far, and the only way is up, right?

A few of these will probably be double posts, if that is frowned upon, let me know, and I'll kill those pictures that are.

On with the show:

Starting out is a couple of old sketches/paintings (not that old, but I forget to date my shit, so I'm not sure how old.)







Old sketches...

Here are a couple more, these were made between the tiger and the face somwhere in time. The red/blue face was my first attempt at airbrush. It was a fun piece to do! I used a ref, as far as I recall. The alien-dude was made while we were playing an RPG called Alternity, so he's supposed to be my character. The color on his staff was done in watercolors after the RPG session.





I'm not going to bomb you guys with loads of my old material, so the above is so you get an idea of where I was at when I first started getting seriously into drawing and painting.

I messed around with this one in painter a bit. The colored version is in the "Guest self portrait"-section.

Any pointers/crits/comments are more than welcome!

As Buzzz said you´re on the right way - your stuff is showing good potential. One thing I realized you should work on is your confidence of lines - you´re quite often scribbling in short strokes that "feather up" the picture and make it seem "nervous". Try a bit working fast with strong lines - maybe with a pen instead of pencils.

I know what I´m taliking about, I´m suffering from the same problems .

Hope this could help a bit and you could understand my english.

Fipse: Thanks man! Always nice to get encouraging words! Concerning the lines, yeah... I know! I'll try to clean it up and use stronger lines. I have a tendency to end up with a fuzzy image.

Yes, indeed. Bags of potential here. I've written the same advice on my previous post, but I think it applies here too. Settle on a single lightsource, perhaps from the top left and stick to it. The orc with the earing is an example of where you need to apply this rule. Both sides of his nose are in shadow.

Here's a new batch. One from my head... a cave troll with lots of cocoons with more cavetrolls in them.



One from ref. I'm from Norway, and this is out largest feline animal; a lynx



and finally one from life.. it's an old ink-pot from my great grandfather. It turned out kinda twisted I think. I'm going to have to focus more on life drawings...

I almost forgot! I didn't post for a couple of days, because I was on a trip with my day job (shudder) and I forgot my sketchbook at home (shame on me), but I found an envelope and a pen, so I got in a few real quick sketches... damn people on the docks couldn't stand still, dammit!

Very good that you're doing work from life also.
Moving people are very hard but the exercise is very good.
I Like the lynx, maybe you can experiment with different pencils (hard soft), that way you get a more complete valuerange (I'm missing some very dark tones)

one thing tho, might be the scans but dont be afraid to go dark in the darkest places in your pencils sketches, or use a pen with a highr softness, like 4b or 2b, i like that one, cus you can go light and dark with the same pen.

dont stop drawing, post more !

hurricane: Thanks man! I've got a problem when it comes to contrast, I think... like with the lynx. It was just flat until I pushed the deeper tones more. The scanner also steals a bit of the values, I think. Anyways, thanks for the crits! I'll be posting more soon!

I've been too busy with everything else this weekend, so shame on me, I haven't been drawing as much as I would've wanted to. But there has been coming a few things down on my sketchpad. Also I've gotten myself some oils and I'm now making a self-portrait in oils. Oils ROCK when compared to acrylics, damnit!

Here are the few sketches I scanned. Not much, but hey..



Here's the oil-SP... I'm into the second layer now. I'll be posting updates as I go along. I've never tried oils before, so this is a brand new experience!



Oh yeah..sorry about the glare...the oil is wet some places.

And finally, something I made in Painter.

I'm experimenting a lot with oils these days. Haven't been updating daily, so I guess I've been in sort of a slump.. I was over at a friends house yesterday for some bbq. I started sketching a bit there (at least I had my sketchbook with me, right? ) This is what came out of it... no ref. on any of these. The guy with the sunglasses is the result of my girlfriend getting her hands on my sketchbook.. hehe



This is a WIP of an oil piece I'm working on... Lot of experimenting going on there. Still getting used to the medium.

Anyone have any good tips on how to photograph paintings without getting that infernal glare? I usually borrow a canon EOS300D to take the pictures...

And by the way; I've been looking at some of the stuff that has been coming back from austin... and I'm mad jealous of you guys that were there! I'll be there wherever the next workshop is!

Yep that's hard to photograph I guess.
The best thing I think is to use daylight as much as possible, indirect because in the sun you also get that glare.

The damn camera had no batteries! Anyhow...here's the udpate.. and a WIP I'm doing in painter... any crits/tips/flames you guys feel like throwing my way on the digital piece is most welcome! She's still too bright, even though I'm planning on lightening the sky a bit.

BTW: photographing the oil-painting is a bitch! This picture turned out all red... I even used the manual white balance to get the colors as true as I could... guess I'm gonna have to try some different lighting.

this is very good to see. i think that you are studying exactly what you should be studying. just do it more. the more you draw the beetter you get. i think that you have some very ambitious paintings. you are painting shit that i would even dare to and i respect that. keep it up and rock hard man.

I've been in sort of a slump, and I've been too busy lately to get in as much drawing/painting time as I would've liked. Just the way it is some times, I guess. Anyhow, I'm back fo' real now, and I'll be posting (hopefully) a whole bunch of stuff soon.



This is a couple of attempts at dynamic poses, which I need to get better at. No ref used. Tried to stay loose.



And a Rembrandt study.. 2b and 6b pencil. Tried to push the contrast here. It turned out OK, I think.. Messed up her eyes a bit though.

Good work on the Rembrandt study.
The oil, I like the colours on that one actually, it's maybe not how you painted it, but I like it.
On your Painter_WIP I would suggest that you paint in some cast-shadows, for instance underneath the arms onto the leg.
Also, it's not clear immediately that she sitting on a ledge, maybe you should push back the area underneath her feet (the background, not the part she is sitting on) by making it darker.
