there's no special meaning behind 'draw from life'. It is what it seems to be. Draw real human beings that are standing/sitting/lying in front of you. There's nothing wrong about manga itself, but you need real basics. You can not draw abstract characters that can convince people if you don't know the reality behind them (oh my, my english sucks. I don't if that expresses what I wanna say)
You can resize your pictures with programs like irfan view. I think they are already big on your computer, but your program scale them down on the screen to make it easier to look at them. But that just mean, that your program is not showing you the real size.
