    Teen Challenge 164: Paradise Falls

    Teen Challenge 164: Paradise Falls

    Topic
This week's topic is Paradise Falls. Paradise falls is a waterfall featured in the Disney Pixar movie Up.
It is Carl Fredricksens destination, his place of refuge. The place that, if he reaches it, all his troubles will be gone.
This is your task. To design a paradise falls, be it your own or the paradise falls of one of your characters. The only requirement is that includes a waterfall, hence the falls part.

    Focus
This weeks focus is atmosphere. Your Paradise Falls is a place of refuge, a place where you can hide from everything bad.
It's therefore important to convey this atmosphere of peace and tranquility through your piece.

    Deadline
The deadline is Sunday 27th of May, 23:59 GMT

Awesome idea Jarkuzy! I feel so very cliche now. Argh... I just hit auto tone and it looks about 10x better. I have a horrible inability to keep an impartial sense of value when painting.

    i am so in

looking good so far guys! heres my quick 2 cents:

Jarkuzy: nice colors and atmosphere. i think the composition could use some adjusting though. everything seems to point towards the leftmost edge of the cliff and then off the canvas; the tilt adds to this. try to establish some lines of flow and more points of interest to move the viewer's eye around the piece and you'll be golden.

Pixie Trick: nice work so far, you'll have lots of different textures to play with that will be really interesting. the values are working now, but everything is really saturated. tone the image down and then bring back areas you want to bring focus to.

lancer_idenoure Thank you for the feedback! I tried adding others elements like you suggested and it looks better now, I think..
I'm still having trouble getting some depth in it, but i'll see what i can do

Jarkuzy: thats looking better. as for depth, most of the objects in your painting are only one value; the water for example, is all a 9 on the value scale. there should be more gradation and large areas should be in shadow in order to break up the value planes

VodkaAndCookies: great start, looking good however the waterfall seems to be coming out of nowhere and gains more water as it goes down. think about how the water would spread out on its way down the mountain.

heres my start. ive still got to work out what the vegetation is going to look like...

lancer: Composition on yours is a bit odd. I keep getting drawn to the sky between the cliffs on the right. There is so much contrast there (both in terms of value and the sharp edge) that the eye is forced to look, but is disappointed to find nothing interesting. The waterfall is off to the side and does not really have much in terms of contrast or anything leading in to it. It also seems somewhat small given the challenge is about the waterfall.

I don't know if I'll enter--it's a little late (plus it can be intimidating going against you!). I might toss around some ideas/sketches if you'd like though.

Since I don't actually have access to photoshop during the week-days... here's my incredibly rushed sketch!

Lancer: Thanks, but considering the amount of time I've got to finish the rendering, that makes two of us xD

We'll see if I finish in time. Here's what I've got so far:
