I used an Albert Bierstadt reference for a short while to see how the wave breaks because he had a beautiful picture of it but after a while I just improvised a lot and used a picture I had taken of a sky as the sky in the picture. I know the lightning is a bit shit and doesn't make sense but I'll work on that.

Hey man, thanks for the comment on my sketchbook. Your digital stuff is improving a lot, especially the figures and environments. As far as pencils and faces go, my only advice is to keep practising, and maybe check out the Loomis books. The .pdfs are pretty easy to find a download of, and have some really helpful tips on face construction. Keep it up.

Nice! Looks like your really pushing it! Darw something everyday...that's the way to go.

Few things that might be useful.

A) Don't smudge. Well..smudge...but with caution. It can easily lead to a drawing that looks like a mess. To me loose sketchy thing always wins over a finely rendered drawing. I can't quite explain it but smudged drawings to me feel very stuffy whereas loosey goosey sketchy thing has sort of air and life to it.

B) Don't draw lips, eyes and noses. Draw shadows.
Do this. Pick a reference picture where there are clear shadows, and then, instead of trying to draw a particular feature just right, draw the shape of the shadowed area.

Shadows are what gives the object the basic clear construction. Not only that but getting the darks down first gives you a reference point to compare to when working on the lighter values.

Ville_s I only smudge sometimes...but it's also the bad quality of the paper of my sketchbook where I sometimes accidentally wipe over the paper with my hand. I just want to fill in my sketchbook and buy a better one so that doesn't happen all that often anymore. I also only have soft pencil at the moment :< So I have to work with that for now.
The thing about the lips and only drawing the shadow... I never thought about that. I'll do that from now on.

Und schon wieder habe ich ein ganzes sketchbook durchgeguckt... dabei wollte selbst noch etwas painten ;D

Hallo frank... so zuerst mal muss ich sagen das ich deinen Einsatz schätze und auch das die viele Abeit langsam Früchte zeigt aber versuch nicht so "Flach" zu denken der Kopf hat eine X,Y und Z-Achse.. auch ich versuche mir das immer wieder bewusst zu machen.

Mir gefallen deine still life studys am meisten... bislang ...weiter so ;D

I've just gone through your sketchbook and can see your practice is paying off. Andrew Loomis has been recommended here quite a few times and I agree, 'Drawing the Head and Hands' helped me out no end, and it's free, definitely worth checking out. Good luck and keep practicing.

Love the backgrounds, some of them have very sophisticated textures.

For the pencils, you need practice more than anything else, in my personal opinión, you can't assimilate too much theory about drawing right now, because with your skill is not going to look right anyway, first train your hands rather than think how something will be right, use models, etc.
