great work
keep it up!
I have the same problem that you have. If you go back and check my studies I did a lot mindless studies, only after 4 months I´m starting to understand how to learn stuff. I´ts not copy, it´s learn.
So today I went to search information on internet to try to solve the problem part and I found some jewels.
I hope you don´t mind if I put the links here.

masoume: Thank you! I'll keep working at it!
Noomwolf: Yeah, that's a very good point! I've been really wanting to do some paintings of screencaps from TV/Movies that I've seen other artists do here on conceptart.org. I've hesitated so far because I feel almost guilty, and that I'd be "copying" some other person's vision. But you know, maybe doing different environments and lighting would help improve how I see things and my rendering ability. Also, thanks a bunch for those links!! Really helpful!
Here is my update for today. I've still got a few more things to work on (and yes, this is my first time painting wings/rocks/what have you, and so the quality isn't that great. I'm learning from it, I promise!) I'll be posting some more studies soon... I'm really bad at uploading them.
EDIT: Added some closeups of the characters.

You paint beautifully! I am nowhere near your level, but I guess more perspective studies can't hurt? I also suggest you read through Vilppu's book as it would teach you how really be flexible with your figures and truly make it comes to life. I feel that looking at your rough hand studies, I can really tell that perspective and projective geometry would really bring your work to a whole other level. Keep the ball rolling, and keep posting! You are doing a great job.![]()

Thank you very much, kamikazel33t! I will most certainly check out Vilppu! Human perspective is definitely a weak point for me as I've been super stubborn my entire life by thinking I never had to study from life and imagination would do all the work for me. That said, after starting from the basics again I am finding that I'm struggling for accuracy and proportion.
I've been doing a lot of sketchbook pencil studies, but honestly I'm just too darn embarrassed to post them here. In my head, I thought I was a lot more talented than I really am and it truly humbled me down to the point where I want to hide behind a rock somewhere. So, I'll keep the bad ones behind in their little rock and eventually post some better ones.
I did some quick, 30 minute head studies today. I'm not liking how muddy the colors look after starting out in black/white and then putting colors on top. I've got to figure out an efficient way to overcome it.

Ahhhh, been super busy with Christmas-related stuff. Here's some quick studies: (agh! I had 4, but I just accidentally saved over it. sigh.)

woah nice stuff love the fact that you drew 100 noses to get your noses right love to see more of stuff like that 100 feet or arms or something you inspired me to do it myself keep it going love your work
Every critique helps me to get on step closer towards my dream so feel free to

Here's a sketch dump, a bunch of things from my sketchbook that I finally decided to post.

your figure sketches are amazing, i really enjoy just looking at them
Thankyou Denzel!![]()
Here's a new one that took me a couple of days. I was really trying to push myself with my rendering capabilities, as well as practice with folds in fabric. I could go further with the dress, but I've already spent so much time on it that I decided to call it done and move on to the next one. Reference photo used.

3 hour photo study. I need to get faster at rendering fabrics, I didn't get very far! Also, I was noticing some issues with my body proportions, so i'm putting aside the digital work again and putting some more time into pencil studies.
Also, I started another character painting. It's about half imagination, half reference. I'm going to try and render armor for the first time.

Some sketches from today:

Yay! more sketches, keep it up! the only thing which I could add(because I am nowhere new as good) is that you work on line quality, I know that you paint so you technically render over it but it is always good to have confident line work. Try doing some 30(maybe even 5 second) gesture drawings to get yourself some really nice and flowing lines. You can even do warm up sketches by filling a page of ellipses, circles, straight lines and curved line practices. This will gradually allow you to your lines to become more accurate and you will be doing them with less strokes then you normally would.

Your colors are awesome and the value range in your painting is also coming along nicely. I really love your skintones
Your sketches could need some more hints to the underlying anatomy. Maybe you should study some bones and muscles.
Hey everyone!
My lack of posting has not gone without lack of studying/drawing! I traveled home to see family over the holidays, and also finally purchased an anatomy book. I've been doing a bunch of studies and sketches on paper, but due to lack of a scanner, I just haven't been up to taking pictures to upload. I found a nice scanner the other day that I am looking into buying, so hopefully you'll see more traditional stuff.
This past week, i've been working on my realistic eyes. Last night, I took what I learned and applied it to a quick painting. Photo reference used, about 4 hours time.

Nice update. I think the jawline on the portrait is a little too straight and the edges are all equally soft. Try to watch out for that.
Keep up the hard work!![]()
Thanks ecki! I went rather fast on that one and was really focused on the facial features.
Here's another update, referenced from a screencap of Portlandia. It took about 3 and a half hours while I waited for the boyfriend to come home
![]()
Wow, I really like how your face anatomy is improving! Like a rocket engine
Keep those anatomy studies up and I would also suggest more of those quick poses to loosen up a little.
For practicing faces/heads, I would suggest doing some 2-4 minute quick studies over at: http://lovecastle.org/draw/
Make sure to select only Female/Male heads, I recommend this, because it helped me a lot![]()
sweet, sweet hard work, i see you worked on your figures alot thats very very good, i really like your paintings like ecki said the skintones are very good and solid well wouldnt know much about that since i know jack about painting anyways what i would love to see you try next is: Exaggeration cause the thing is i think you are practicing heavily on reference and while that is all fine alot of the time the reference of the pose is somewhat shy or not really pushed, its YOUR job as the artist to pick up on that and Push it yourself, make the motion more clear and readable, you are being too shy around the figure remember you are the artist you are the one that must make this look Better (you are the one doing it after all, all the decisions come from You not the reference) theres nothing wrong with changing the ref to your liking when you see that the piece is too still or lacks force, im really loving your work in this sb, i want to see more! in the mean time i wish you the bestst of luck! and work hard!
my sketchbook! Drawing like a maniac!!
My Blog
Destroy your weaknesses! theres nothing more to it! stop bitching grab that pencil and sketch Away!
I was going to suggest that you be careful with your facial planes and constructions, but after seeing a lot of your studies on the 2nd page I can definitely see that you're working hard on that, so just keep it up and post more work! I'm also interested in how you got into doing art for iphone games. Seems like a pretty fun gig!
wowyour figure are really solid keep it up!
Wow, thank you everyone for your wonderful comments so far! I've been doing many, many pencil sketches and (still) without a lack of a scanner, it takes a lot of effort to upload everything. I might just suck it up and do so at some point so I can document the progress I am making.
Today, I went back into digital and did something fun after all the studies. I spent two evenings on this, meaning I should probably render it out a bit more, but in all honesty I don't want to get too invested in it. So here's to Fluttershy!

Some digital sketches from tonight.

I think about 30 or so hours. It's inspired by a character from one of my favorite books: "The Orphan's Tales: In The Night Garden" by Catherynne Valente.

Hey there! Your edges look better in this last. I especially like how you rendered the grass. One thing to be aware of, you seem to elongate your foreheads. The distance between brow and hairline is about the same as between brow and bottom of nose.
sketchybook|website ::.
moonskittles:Thanks for pointing that out! I didn't even notice until you said something, but i'll be more aware of it in future drawings.
I'm going to stop being lazy and post some of my sketchbook drawings later today. I'm already seeing an improvement, and I want to document it all in one place![]()
Okay, here we go. I tried to condense my sketches as much as possible to avoid a lengthy post. I left out a bunch to avoid spamming my own online sketchbook, but I included both the ones i like and don't like to be honest with myself. I still don't have a scanner, so please excuse the bad quality.

Here's some more, and there will be another post of sketches following.
