It's been a long while since I've updated. I've been on break from Uni for about a month and I'm finding it much easier to improve my paintings, both technically and conceptually, without the stress of trying to jump through all of those educational hoops. It's been great!

These images are more or less in chronological order. If I used a reference image I'll make a note immediately below the image and provide a link to the reference image itself. I'm trying to use creative commons images for reference as much as possible.

I meant to post some of my timelapse recordings as well!

Unfortunately I can only attach one video to each post; so I'll try doing multiple posts. I hope that's not inappropriate here?

A little bit of casual illustrative work I've been doing:

i like the piece but the black pipe really takes up alot of my attention, instead of the tower and distant city

Tried another illustration for a casual client, but it didn't work out so well. The idea is a freezing cold, very northern town that uses mirrors to get more sunlight

So I thought a bunch and drew up a pencil thumbnail, then painted a greyscale sketch, which I'm much happier with!

Did a bunch of anatomy drawings last week, quick one minute studies from photographs. I don't think they're worth posting just yet.

Thank you! I find my compositions to be pretty simplistic and I tend to avoid clutter, which is something I need to work on!

In terms of this image I think I should have widenend the frame a little and repositioned the little ship that's being winched up, moving it to the left so that instead of sitting there with the dark machine wall behind it it would have blue sky, which would have made it much easier to read.

Oh well, I'll remember for next time

    Thumbs up

Did a rough self portrait from a reference picture, kept it pretty loose.

I was pretty stumped with this one at around the 70% mark. When I'm mid-painting I tend to just ignore the entire notion of looking at references and therefore get pretty frustrated. I think I need to get references into my workflow more often so that I can avoid falling into that mid painting slump. I'm happy with the output though!

Thanks! I'm starting to consider using textures and whatnot to flesh the paintings out a bit more.

    Also, another video!

Nothing much to show today; thought I'd share a little lighting setup I planned. I tried drawing a sphere lit by the scene's lighting to help with painting the more complex form of the ship. It worked really well!

A quickish painting from about a week ago. Getting the hang of using blue reflected light from the sky means I haven't done an overcast/cloudy image in a long time. It was nice to have a change!

Been doing some value paintings to improve my overall use of value. It's really tough to describe shapes clearly while trying to take into account the scene's lighting and the materials depicted as well. Any criticism would be most welcome!
