    The Fear

The Fear is a TV serial I never watched.

The Fear is also what keeps people from learning art.

Yesterday I felt The Itch (to draw) and it beat The Fear.

I opened a new account to start a new sketchbook.

I'm 36 years and 9 months old and I've wanted to be an artist as far as I can remember. I haven't gone far (yet) and I'd like to change that.

One good thing I've learned is that in art there's no age limit to learn. Yay!

    Please criticize, correct and red-line!

My first project is to understand Iain Glen's face in order to be able to redraw him from memory. This is important so in the future I can draw realistic characters consistently from imagination.

I tend to get distracted by detail which leads me to make mistakes. I'm redoing these today focusing more on proportion, structure and planes.

Books I own to help me:
Drawing the Head and Hands by Andrew Loomis
Figure Drawing: Design and Invention by Michael Hampton
The Artist's Guide to Human Anatomy by Gottfried Bammes
Perspective Drawing Handbook by Joseph D'Amelio

    Books on my wishlist:
    Vilppu Drawing Manual
Drawing the Head and Figure by Jack Hamm
Mastering Drawing the Human Figure from Life, Memory, Imagination by Jack Faragasso
Master Class in Figure Drawing by Robert Beverly Hale
Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters by Robert Beverly Hale
The Frank Reilly School of Art by Doug Higgins
The Human Figure in Motions by Eadweard Muybridge
The Artist's Atelier: Reference guide to Structural Concepts and Principles by J.T. Doren
Strength Training Anatomy by Frederic Delavier
Drawing Human Anatomy by Giovanni Civardi
Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist by Stephen Rogers Peck

Any comments on these books or further recommendations?

I've red-lined my own work to find mistakes. Then I traced structure guides over prints of the references I was working on. I've found out that his nose is much shorter than it seems at first sight and it's easy to misalign the eyes. I redrew one of the photos and did a few more sketches from other references found here. But I still made mistakes.

How to measure relationships more carefully?

I think today I'll dive into some reading and maybe try some exercises from my books.

The acomplishment is in finding mistakes, not in not making any.

Hey! Really nice! Studying those head planes totally helped! You are doing great!
Don't struggle with measurements too much though. I think it comes with practice. Better do 100 little sketches instead of spending hours measuring.
