ladys and gentleman. My name is Sander I am new to this site, actually this is my very first post here. A s
sketchbook. Been doing digital work for quite a few years, but more graphical effects then anything else, often using random 3d shapes as a base.

But lost my spark a few years ago. However the urge to create is coming back, although in a slightly different way then before, I want to learn to draw and paint. without much of a background in this kind of thing. I know very little about basic principles and the likes, so I have a long long way to go before i can match up to a lot of the peops on here.

The reason I made a sketchbook on here is simple, I have been sketching a good bit the latest day's and I do not want to get lousy. The work here is very inspirational, the sketchbooks of some of you guy's here are just amazing, and posting random pages of sketch work on here will give me good reason to come back here a lot and get pumped up with the inspiration to work hard again.

So here are my first sketchworks. All of these are digital, because i want to get more used to working with my tablet on the road to become a better illustrator, painter and whatever more I want to learn in the future.
I hope to do more study-like work in the future because that might just be the way to improve my basics.

5 more to practice human figure drawing, these are in my sketchbook. Sure hope i can do these faster when i have practice more, because this complete page might have taken me half an hour. Gonna do more of them this evening !

Hey man, good to see you at work! Try to prioritize pose before form when you're doing the gesture studies, and definitely find a source for your anatomy studies (I'd recommend Loomis, but you can find plenty about others on the site here and how to study it). Take your time to observe and nail the proportions and keep drawing a lot!

Thank you for the tip sir! found a website that has a scanned in version of Loomis books and did read the first chapter and briefly looked through the rest. i can totally see how this can help me to better understand how to draw people. Thanks again for the tip.

Here below is something i did quite quickly. DAC (design a character) is a group on Deviantart i just found. They give random shapes and there members make them into characters. Kind of fun to see how all the different people have different outcomes. Not to sure if this is good for anything, but at least they are kind of fun to do and take now time at all. Haha!

But next, more serious studying with Loomis's work!

Start at study of Loomis. Not happy with the front view and will certainly redo it. But i think the side view didn't turn out to bad.

Man, your stuff at dA looks really good. It is worthy of respect that you choose to improve your traditional drawing skills when you're already that good with 3D. I wish you good luck

Thank you Axelga! I feel thought that you give me more honor then I deserve. I have found my way to make (for the lack of a better term) cool effects. But have never done any studying on fundamental. Ofcourse i have picked up a few things here and there, but I feel by starting to practice my traditional skills, I can also improve my digital work for the future. My ultimate goal at this point is to learn and paint in photoshop, and i surely will need more knowledge before i'll be able of doing it well. Not to mention, I want to break away from my abstract style or possibly incorporate non-abstract elements into it.

Now I do not think that the time I lots of hours spend in Photoshop and cinema4d so far have been wasted, because I have always been striving to learn things. And I hope that having used 3d software will help me in understanding the 3d shapes of subjects that i will be drawing, had to figure out good lighting setups to complement my shapes etc. I know my way around Photoshop, Have used lots of different tools, have experimented with color etc.

In short I do think i picked up a lot of things doing what i have been doing. But the actual knowledge I have feels very random, incomplete and scattered to myself.

Here is some more study's. A little bit more of Loomis, and trying to figure out the correct shape of cast shadow of a cube in perspective. Having a bit of trouble with that, but i feel like the the last ones are, well... getting there. =P

These are two images that where in the original post, but that I did remove from there to put in a nice preview image. But I still want to put them on there, so that they will not get lost. Because I kind of liked how they turned out, and I want to be able to look back at the progress made later on.

Both images are quite fast images that where me experimenting.

First is a guy playing piano where i referenced the piano, but not the guy. Before looking at Loomis books.

Second was after watching one of Sinix (found out about his channel recently, and because of it about this site) his videos on YouTube about thumb-nailing. and this was my first try at it. Admitted the designs are a bit boring, but
I'm sure that if I practice enough I will improve

Wanted to have a start at Loomis faces. Got a bit carried away with drawing more cartoon
faces, using the very basis of his approach when I quickly glanced over the study material. On
the last 2 pictures I actually started studying thought. I think these are very fun, because faces
might be the most exceptionable thing in the world, and they force me to think in 3d right from
the start, and I think that is a good thing.

I will get back to his figure drawing stuff thought, just want to mix things up a little.

Also found a bunch of fiber pens in one of my drawers, they will sure help me with studying
because i can draw different layers in different colors or more easily mark important things.

Great, I will do the same thing with your work. Because we studying the same subject it might help to see how someone else goes about something i have problems with. And it will be great to see you develop as an artist as well.

About, pose maniacs, I know about the site, some of my first sketches on here where done based on those poses. But got Loomis handed to me to work on proportions, but since i have finished the first basics of figure drawing i might need to get back at them in a little while, and see if I improved yet.

a little update containing:

- Some random doodles
- Some Loomis face study, some of them are pretty nice i think.
- A quick shadow practice, but i will get into this later.
- Some 60 second gesture drawings. 30 second really is to short for me at this point. Some turned out ok, but most are crap, Because i don't really have time to figure out different things.

Have done a bunch of drawings in sketchbook today, But its late and i am tired so i won't scan them in. On the other hand, here is a try at digital. Trying to put values on a Loomis type head, with a way to big nose. =P

I understand that i need to practice especially the values from life, and I will, but this was just try-out, to see what I know. and it is not a lot. =P

- A digital city-scape, very closely following allong with one of Dylan Cole's gnomon dvd's. He really is a god. I am kind of happy with some parts of the result But very unhappy with others (lights in general). But I certainly did learn a lot from it.

@ Kitzuke, glad to be inspiring you. haha.

Here is a little color theory start, also done a few exercises from drawing on the right side of the brain by Betty Edward. That woman and her brain theory seems kind of scary, but i do think she helped me to better understand how to really look what something looks like, but i don´t feel like those drawings are worth posting.

Still having trouble with 'thinking in 3d', so I Thought doing some perspective practice might help me.

Perspective is very fascinating, because it can get so complex. But for the same reason it is quite hard.

Filled some more pages of my sketchbook, But a big part is whit practicing line quality, free hand straight line practice, eclipse practice, and a few gestures. But i found these perspective ones most interesting of my studies for today. Certainly need more practice, but at least these are better then the few random cubes i drew here and there.

Those perspective studies are neat! Where are they from? Or did you make up the mountainous shape on your own?

The shapes are my own, but I made after watching a dvd about perspective principles borrowed from a friend. The dvd was from Gnomon and by Scott Robertson. He Designs mainly vehicles it seems after viewing his website. Its quite amazing to see him draw perspective free handed. Well worth the watch if you want to learn perspective.
