    sci-fi project

This is a school project; we were tasked with creating a sci-fi world based on
the historic Punic Wars. We were also required to choose a specific style to follow and replicate it in our work. The artists I chose to study are Craig Mullins and John Singer Sargent ('cause they're amazing). So here's a style guide I created, based on a few of their art pieces.

Looks OK...is the robot with the missing arm one of your paintings, or one of Craig's?

I'm not sure if studying people's painting styles is the best starting point for creating a world. You might do better to study the artists who actually designed the "Halo" universe (Shi Kai Wang, and others) rather than a guy who made paintings (however beautiful) of it.

Also: Sargent's color is pretty damn accurate, in my opinion.

Thanks for the input! Those two paintings are both my designs, the one on the right is a fixed pose. There aren't a lot of restrictions on this project, world-wise; the idea was to create a number of finished paintings that would fit with another style other than my own.

Here's a few other concepts I've been working on.

Nice work - well set up analysis and style guide. Glad to see it. A bit more Sargent would have been nice!

Good call on the Berkey feel VK...not something you usually see applied to a human scale.
    What would Caravaggio do?

Thanks! I'll try to add a bit more of Sargent's brushwork.
Here's a more finished piece, by the way.

Beautiful technique/style which will take you where you want to go. The bloated croc thing doesn't work for me though design wise...just breaks down as far as plausability goes, unless of course it has something going for it that isn't indicated? Like a giant sticky/lash tongue? Or? What evolutionary principles and environment pressures have led to that form and function?

Check out Wayne Barlowe's "Expedition" for some really nice ideas on evolution and form. Looking forward to more!

Very nice designs, did I say that I love your style? That crab is a bit large for my taste though. How does it relates to the punic wars?

    This thread is great.
More Sargent would have been nice, I love the armor and the giant crab (great lighting).
