Hi,
I decided to start a sketchbook to see if I can get some critiques. It is hard to improve when you have no one to tell you what is wrong. I will definitely try to take into consideration any critiques that you give me... hopefully it will show in this thread.

(BTW, any pointers on how to make the images not pixelated would be great... they look fine on my computer until they are uploaded to the interweb)

Anyone feel free to critique, I don't take offense what-so-ever.

I just got a job so unfortunately I won't be able to draw a lot but I am going to squeeze it in whenever I can.

Here is some more stuff. Some from photo ref, some observation. Most are Loomis heads studies... some just copying his drawings and some coming up with on my own. I notice that the heads in the first image are skewed, the face it straight on while the head is turned slightly....

Your studies look amazing. But make sure you apply them and do them from memory after you had copy them. To see what you need to work on. Other than that your doing great. Do more from imagination.

Thank you Passhunate... that is really good advice. I have always had a hard time balancing imagination with observation... I think I may be on the opposite side of the spectrum where I do too much observation (when lots of people do far too much imagination without learning the basics).

I will try and make sure I do at least a decent amount of imagination as well.

Bringing back my old thread and hoping to post at least one new image per day. I have been learning how to paint the last few months so thought I would post to try and get some feedback.

Oil on canvas. Still a WIP. Any ideas about what direction I should take this in? Trying to focus on getting as much depth as possible.... I think I am going to punch the orange fabric up to a yellow to make it jump forward more.

Dude thanks for the comment on my page. Perseverance does give good result. i like the oil paintings, i would so like to do an oil painting but i'm too lazy to mess around with traditional paints, the pencil works aren't bad either. add some figures please!

Thanks for the comments you guys. Much appreciated. The bones and feet studies are from Dr. Paul Richer's Artistic Anatomy book. A really excellent book that I need to spend more time with.

Those two things should go hand in hand in my view. Also I think you should do alot more observation and never stop doing it. Drawings from "imagination" mostly reflect the things you already have memorized. So you have to gain more experience in seeing and understanding how things are built up to improve your imaginary drawings, I guess.

Thanks for the comment DariusV. I definitely agree that doing a lot of work from observation is key and helps with imagination. I do think it is good to try and do stuff from imagination as well though just to work on the more creative side of the thought process. I feel my imagination starts to be harder to bring out the longer I go without using it.

This is just a little more finished thing that I did for my brother's magazine. I just did the art, not the text or placement of the text.

Cool pencil sketches! And I like magazine's cover despite it looks little bit flat for me. But I think it's a matter of practice.

Well hey! This thread is still here? Hm, guess I should put something in it. In fact, maybe I will just keep putting stuff in it from now on. I just moved to Italy to study drawing and painting at Angel Academy of Art. I am done dabbling. This is now my life.

Good evening laddies and gents'.

Today I am just posting a few anatomical studies. I used to try and make these drawings just look pretty. Now, I don't see the point. It isn't about making a nice pretty drawing, it is about understanding. I am studying from Bridgman as well as Dr. Paul Richer. I also watched a bunch of youtube videos to understand how the scapula and clavicle move together and how the deltoid and pectoralis major attach to the skeleton. I feel I am starting to understand the shoulder joint.

These are shown in order with the time I drew them. You can see I have more understanding in the last page than the first.

You cover a lot of stuff with your studies! Perhaps one thing you could try a little more is shading with more and smoother values like the first two pages in #25.
