Hey everyone I'm Miles, and I am 14 years old, my History on CA is quite short, and I really want to improve so I thought I should start a sketchbook on here so I can help be motivated. Harsh crits wanted!!

The 1st image was a portrait I did today, I am trying to improve at pencil rendering and try out different things it took about 50 mins, here is the reference: http://www.99facesofoccupywallst.org/Alexi
The likeness is meh ( the chin is way too long, lips need to be shifted up a bit and right cheek is lower than the left one ), but it was more about rendering that likeness, but with more practise I will be able to get likeness more spot on.
The 2nd image is a film still from The Hobbit. The shading is...flat and that was what I was trying to avoid in the first picture. I did this about 3 days ago. Reference: http://www.thehobbitblog.com/wp-cont...ailerimage.jpg.

Concepts and Studies, any advice would be good, ( I need to work on anatomy I know and volumes )
The concept is for Bloodsports 10, and he is supposed to be a voodoo warrior, the black painting around his one good eye, is to protect it from the evil spirits.
The second boat was a boat from imagination and I was trying to apply the things I learnt in the study.

Maaan nice start!! really awesome flamingo hogarth study! Your environments need more work I practice sometimes by copying photos and it has helped out a lot so i recommend it !

Good start. I would suggest exercising bigger and bolder. A good warm of for that is making two points and any drawing medium and seeing if you can connect with as straight line as possible. Also trying pushing yourself to limit your strokes down to two for each angle of a shape. Keep it up!

I think you should practice more linework. Your paintings are actually good - but I think it would help you to use more reference-photos. Keep it up!

Thanks Klaustrophil, my linework is pretty shabby I know I am trying to get used to drawing with my confidence and from my elbow so hopefully once I get better at that so will my lines, A quick portrait of http://www.99facesofoccupywallst.org/Daryl, still trying to improve my hatching skills I know it is quite... any tips on improving it?
Also some sketches this is the first time I have drawn any mythical creature, but it was really fun and once I get a better understanding of the muscles in the face and I will hope to get better at drawing them.
The third page was another sketch but it really awkward looking I know, more anatomy studies and poses for me.

you have a great eye and i think you will go far
the icon, the very first image you posted is very strong. as is the coloured gecko thingy

i recommend you work on basic overall proportions, to get the big shapes in nice before you go onto the smaller ones, so you avoid things like heads being wonky and so on.

this document is very helpful, i recommend practicing drawing 3d shapes as much as you can. dont be dismissive of how important doing these exercies are for people at any stage

Hey man, keep uP the good work, you are really good for your age, when I was your age all I drew was manga characters and was obsessed with the style and I was too stubborn to want to draw anything else, don't do that haha, practice the fundamentals first and keep practicing and you will go far!

This is just a study from the Awesome Horse Studios streams, one of the people there was streaming their painting while the model was sitting so it was an awesome experience because it was like real life figure drawing but through streams, it would be awesome to try something like that again.

Ak9s Thanks I took a look at the website and it is pretty interesting, I have tried start breaking things down in my mind into basic shapes and drawing them as well, because my stuff can often be wonky.

sammyshields I like your sketchbook man , and I going to make sure I carry on practising those fundamentals.

Female face study which I dislike, a still life of my bed nob thingy magigy and some 30 second poses, in the poses I tried to be more economic with the lines but it went a bit pear shaped, still because I barely took my pencil of the paper I got poses finished quicker and for some of them, they had more energy and less pecky lines. I am still going to try and improve on them though!

Cool stuff dude, awesome that your starting off on here so young!

My advice would be to start really pushing those fundamentals man, start studying Loomis, vilipu, bridgeman etc whatever takes your fancy, and don't just copy. Actually try to think hard how stuff works and read everything he says. And make sure to try to apply what you learn. (But I see you have been trying to do it with the bloodsports which is great!) Also doing still lifes like your door handle is good to, draw anything you can find and think about how the form works.

But yeah man keep it up you have potential!

So I have been trying to do more Loomis stuff and I have also been trying to break things down into basic shapes ( Think like a 3D modeler ) I am not sure if that is how they think, but it has been suprisingly fun and interesting taking a still frame from a video and breaking it down into shapes. The mannikins you see here are stills from SixMoreVodka's Draw Or Die. The rest are just poses a half finished portrait which I am not sure if I will finish it ( highly doubt it ), and a still life of a banana. I have been trying to improve my hatching with each drawing that I do and it has been having mixed results to say the least . Also Thanks Dilated for commenting and I totally 100% agree with you about the more studying thing.

1 hour Speedpainting, self portrait, Loomis and Poses
I have been trying to use a fineliner to try and improve my lines it feels like I am drawing with no pressure sensitivity on photoshop lol.
I normally draw from Loomis twice, then redraw it from memory then draw it again from the book. I am not too happy with the self portrait as the likeness is not as high as I would want it to be, but at least it is from life I guess ( mirror ) I also need to get a kneaded eraser because I couldn't but the reflection in the eyes because my eraser was too big.
