    ROUND #253, living interplanetary vessel

    topic:

    ROUND#253,living interplanetary vessel

This week we're going to go sci-fi.

Your job this week is to design a large alien creature that can hold and transport a separate alien species between different planets. Acting as a living spaceship.

Show us what it would be like if space travel was an achievement of biology and evolution instead of engineering and technology.

    Requirements this week...

    - the creature must be able to travel through outer space, and land on planets.

    - the creature must be able to hold, enclose, and protect smaller air breathing creatures from the vacuum of space. You don't need to depict the small species, but you can.

    - the creature must be 100% biological.

    Deadline:

    March 29th 9:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

    It's takeing shape slowly

Here's a first attempt at this one.. I may go with a different configuration for it but this was my first sketch of it. I haven't inserted the riders as of yet.. still working on the creature.

I just want to clarify the 100% Biological requirement. Does this mean the creature must have flesh and bones or could it possibly be a nebula like creature made of stars, matter and gas etc? Basically, not of this earthly world type of biology.

Does the creature have to be able to take off from a planet as well?

VegasMike: I would assume that by biological, (lark means not 'man-made' or alien made or whatever...biological structures are living structures, so if your creature is a living rock then I guess it is biological

I've been in a bit of a sci-fi mood lately, already watched the matrix trilogy recently and halfway through star wars, and started playing metroid again
btw this topic reminds me of the leviathans from MP3...

Here's a silhouette of my living vessel atm...still tweaking things here and there, but basic idea is there...
Was thinking it's mouth opens and it's tongue is used as a ramp, and it's crew are actually a team of doctors/vets that actually maintain it's internal organs and feed it sustinence during it's journey from planet to planet, legs are just used to support it's weight when it is grounded

Plaguebone cool to see your tacjling this chalenge early. Try experimenting more with the design, doing thumb nails and silhuettes and stuff. It looks abit plain at the mo.

Rob Powell Good start, keep pushing the idea dude.

Feng Zhu is prity awesome at creating sci fi alien space crafts and giant creatures. People looking for inspiration should check out some of his stuff here - http://www.artbyfeng.com/

This is a great subject I've experimented with in the past and one I wouldn't mind revisiting!

FWIW, this is my old "biotech" spacecraft design:

It's a bit boring, and my computer illustration skills were very basic when I rendered it; in fact, I believe it was the first piece I rendered using a tablet instead of a mouse, so hopefully I'll be able to come up with something more interesting for this round. I may use some of the concepts from my original piece and reapply them in an improved manner. My plan with the original was to create a complete story around this alien technology which actually turns out to be a sapient species which conquers other civilizations slowly over a generation or more by making them dependent upon it for their every need and then slowly assimilating them. In the end even their bodies and genetic code are melded together.

So I have in mind concept of golden dragon few times bigger than Earth, crossing universe on his wings.
If its OK? Isn't too fantasy - like? Or stupid?

Is there any specific design element that would explain how it fares passengers across the vacuum of space, that's my first concern with that idea.

Also good luck guys I'm sitting this one out due to time constraints but good luck everyone

    Cool start guys.

I'm off on holiday in a couple of days, so I won't get to enter. I quite enjoyed this though - my imagination goes a bit silly!

    It's a Space Flea!

The Space Flea is a large animal with evolved to jump between planets. It's hind legs could propel itself out of the atmosphere, and gravitaional pull of smaller masses. The flea photo synthasises and uses stored chemicals to produce oxygen, which it stores in it's air sack, and consumed slowly when in space. The flea was never very intelligent, and suffered from an awful sense of direction. Fortunately it evolved alongside Flea Symbiotes, which maintained and guided the flea, living inside the air sack. The rear thruster expels oxygen and is used to guid the Flea in a vacuum.

The Flea Symbiotes, with their larger intelegence quickly came to rule the Space Fleas and use them for exploration.

Really cool topic. I wanted to do a sort of parasitic transport. I want to keep my creatures non-sentient, and just have them flying around in space and getting pulled into a planet by gravity and either wrecking havoc on the indigenous population or establishing creature colonies.
    Here's my first take:

system404: Very nice line drawings. How do you get such natural looking lines? Maybe my tablet is too small. Those concepts are going to be very cool.

Might add 2 more and extend the canvas up but only one so far to be safe. Similar to my last cow design but this time with a tripod like stance for landing. Aquatic theme here. Fish would best evolve to fit the job well.

    Good luck!

Yajmon - I draw in a really big image size, then I scale it down using bicubic sharper. Don't know what difference the tablet size might do, mine's a Intous 3 9x12, I think.

So I tweaked my idea a bit, rather than a colony of a single creature with a "passenger" creature, decided to do a whole multi organism vessel. Decided to flesh these out a little bit more.

    Droserapod

I've never entered one of these things before, but was given a chance to earn some extra credit for school by making a submission.

I had a lot of fun with this idea. It's still pretty rough, but I have the general idea down.

After drawing several brief little nothings to generate some ideas I came up with the idea to make a kind of vessel that more or less, well, much more, takes it's passengers by force. It's kind of a venus-flytrap-beartrap that snatches a host and launches itself into space and kinda jelly-fishes its way through space back to its home planet.

I decided to call it the Droserapod. Drosera are a species of man-eating plant so I figured it would be fitting.

Anyways, enjoy. Hopefully I'll find time to do more of these in the future.

Here is my initial sketch idea. The creature will be a biomechanical serpent, attached to a comet / asteroid, protectively wrapped around smaller creatures. I hope to get time on this (only just seen the brief today).

I love this topic but I'm having a hard time cooking something up for it. I have a lot of ideas of how stuff should and could work, but I can't seem to find a cool shape for the creature.. :/

Pixeltuner, that was my problem as well. This time around I just started doing scribbly silhouettes until I found one I liked, and then I started making it "work."
