These are all looking really nice, its great to see all the different approaches everyone takes! Some more progress on mine, still a few tweaks I wanna try before I render it all out.

I was browsing here today and decided to whip up a sketch myself. The idea is that the glowing river is somehow a positive outcome, against the stark relief of it's source in the background.
It's rather dull at the moment. I might move things around or start over
Here are two wips and a tentative final (last one). I'm new to environments and would love helpful criticism! It is based off of Monet's famous water lily garden at Giverny, with some magical glowing koi fish thrown in to push the fantasy element.
small update on my river thing..
I've made the trees in the distance smaller but a lot of tweaking still needs to be done. I need to get seriously faster at this though![]()
Some great stuff all around, cool to see so many various approaches.

Ughhhh....worms are harrrrrd. At least when they glow, they are...I don't know how to make them look realistically shaded while making them glow. I'm not making nearly as much progress as I'd hoped, but I'll keep working at it.
Thank you Corrick for the tip about the aerial perspective and contrast...I realize my worms looked a little odd before, and hopefully they're a bit better now. I broke up the background a bit...I need to play with that a little more.
Also, thank you zephyri for the tip on the mushrooms--I didn't get around to doing them yet, but I will definitely look at your excellent example! You created some absolutely gorgeous fungi.
So good things there!
At this moment works of yatzenty, bara, Corrick are my favorite.
And kwshutt, at early stage I didn't like your work, but now it turning in something really good.

Environment never was my strong point, so I decided to work on it.
But I begin thinking so reading some tutorials would be temporary better solution for me.
Im going to feel silly if they pop up soon, but Ive submitted 2 WIPs in the last 2 days and haven't seen them yet, and am unable to contact the moderator listed. Does anybody have any information about how long it takes posts to show and who I can contact? Thanks so much in advance!
CassandreBolan-had the same problem, found solution somewhre on the forums - just post a reply with one line sentence, and then edit post and paste image.
quick update for me:

ok, the post finally worked (thanks to najtkriss for the help)
Here are a few of my WIPS. I don't have a lot of experience with environments, which is why I am participating in these challenges. I really look forward to everyone's feedback!
The backstory is based around Monet's waterlilies at his Giverny garden (I have a fine art background- I couldn't resist). To underline the sacredness this place has aquired and to push the fantasy aspect I threw in some magical glowing koi fish!

Hello folks ,
Long time listener, first time caller. The amount of great environments here is simply amazing! Thought I'd throw my WIPS and final image in.
comments and crits more than welcomed.
Thanks!

I really love this event. Bucketing down inspiration... Awesome entries!
Hi, this is my first Eow, so be gentle
First thing I thought of when I heard glowing river was a river of lava. This is just a sketch, I'm not really sure where to go with it. maybe add some structures or animals. any advice is welcome![]()
Great work on here guys! This is my first post on here so hopefully I'll be doing every challenge from now on when I can.
Thanks
Steve
Here's my final. It was fun. Congrats to everyone else here-there are tons of amazing entries!

I know that I really lack in both skill and graphic expertise as far as environment and with my new Wacom (Cintiq). I suppose that practice will make improvements. This is just a quick idea. I may end up changing a bit of it or starting back over from scratch. Enjoy. Please give feedback. I want to improve my skills.
I'm not sure where else to go with this image, I tried adding some burnt out ruins, but it didnt look good, so I guess this will be my final.
CassandreBolan - Awesome concept. Nice use of depth and mood.
zephyri - Love the factory idea. Keep it up. I'm looking forward to seeing the final.
kwshutt - Interesting take on this concept. Thinking outside the box.
Viewing these all as a whole... one word.. AWESOME job guys/gals.
Still tweeking and tweeking... Slowly taking shape![]()
final final final
blargh. All I did was play around the colour scheme... The grey bg wasn't really working out for me...
:| Kick asses eowpees!
Well, here's my FINAL! Thank you to those who gave me some really helpful advice!
Corrick: I think yours, as well as its description, is one of the most beautiful pieces. I really like the thought you put into it, and the idea is extremely well executed.
Android411: what a fun idea! I love the idea of a vertical, non-liquid (at least, I think it isn't liquid) river!
hekatoncheir: I really like your interpretation with this one. The river of light is pretty out-of-the box, and again, I feel that your execution is very well-done. You were complaining about the composition earlier, but I don't think there's anything wrong with it (although, this is my first time, so my advice might be a little worthless)--I feel that you're focusing on the river and the banks directly, and I think that works well.
najtkriss: fantastic job rendering the temple/house. The lights and darks in this piece are really well thought out, and the brush work really illustrates the speed of the wind and water.
Metallurgist, just a quick thought for you and something it took ahwile for me to learn. I see a lot of professional concept artists add things in for either 1) story or 2) scale. people work well for this, because they are very relatable, and it's easy because its can be just a silhouette. I think a lot of my past pieces suffered from no story element, even adding a spaceship helps! then the viewers are looking at it wondering what is happening.
Awesome entries so far!!
My attempt... sadly I have no time to work on it more...

FINAL...
Unique in the universe, The River is a tiny super-dense star emitting a stream of matter that does not conform to known laws of physics. Around this stream are six rock formations, or "arches". Some evidence suggests these arches are not natural, but were artificially constructed at some point in the distant past. Over time, many peoples and cultures have settled on the arches, drawn by the mysteries of The River.

Is there still time? I've been checking in on the EOW between rounds and been amazed at the quality and cool stuff going on in here.
I wanted to have a go, lots of experiments and lots of fun. Underwater glowing riversystem.
