    IOW #20 - Zodiac

Illustration of the Week #20: Zodiac

This is a two week topic since it is fairly complex.

    Topic
This weeks topic is Zodiac. You must design and illustrate the full circle of the zodiac--this includes all 12 signs. You may either paint it in the traditional manner, or may change it to a theme (science fiction, or some other interpretation of it).

EDIT: You only have to paint ONE of the signs now, but can paint more if you so desire.

    Deadline
EDIT: The deadline is now changed to be Sunday 1st of April, 23:59 GMT

very interesting topic! and very tempting, maybe it could be narrowed down to just one Zodiac, maybe it could get more people to join in, just my two cents I hope I will have time to join!

Even with two weeks I don't think it would be possible for me to design and paint twelve figures.

Sorry, gonna have to give this one a pass.

This is a really cool topic, but there's not nearly enough time for all 12 o.O

Yeah, awesome topic but more time needed for execution if all 12 are to be done.

Oww, I noticed this a little late, but I'm still going to give it a try
It's on the simpler side though, that's ok, right?

    How about Zombie Themed?
I'm not happy with Aries, and I'm considering going for the digital weight (w/brain), rather than the scales for Libra.
Some of them will probably look more zombiefied in coulor though.

Seeing as there isn't a lot of stuff being posted and people seem to think time is short, would people like an extension of a week?

Yeah. It's a cool topic. It's a shame people didn't jump on it from the start.

    Update

Refined the lines and worked on Aries colors. Might put a box around them

Eclectix - Those are really neat
Aminare - Looking forwards to seeing how this progresses

Love the woodcut look and the colours!

I've been hoping to jump into these challenges but I just don't have time for something like this. Like the work the few of you have posted though.

Nice work Whiskey_Sour, Libra is def the best one, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a Libra. I was a little confused with the concepts for Pisces and Aquarius at first, pisces is just about always portrayed as two fish facing opposite directions, and Aquarius needs more Aqua! I also think a larger stinger on Scorpio just for badass sake

Oh My God, Whiskey Sour! That's awesome! You've actually managed to make libra cool.
Pisces is my favourite though. He's kind of retro sci-fi :p. And I agree. Aquarius needs a little more aqua. Now he kind of looks like a frost-mage (IMO), and disappears in the crowd. I also think there is something weird with Taurus' nose, like it's less bovine, but then it also kind of works
Looking forwards to seeing it finished!

Alright guys, since there seems to be a lot of trouble involving finishing this, I will be extending the deadline a week AND changing it to be only painting a minimum ONE of the signs (you can paint any number though). My apologies to those who have spent time working on all 12 so far and who would have made the original deadline. I just feel this way produces a better competition rather than just one or two final entries.

This is an awesome topic. Here's what I'm working on, though they're extremely rough. Not sure which idea I like more, so I'm working up two comps. I was inspired by paintings of the muses, and want a flowing look.

Cool images everyone. Lady Medusa, yours makes me smile every time I look at it =).

This is my first time participating, hopefully joining in late wont handicap me too much now that the challenge has been changed to one of the signs. Here is my take on Taurus (wip), thoughts?

    Whats up Illusweekers!

Someone in the CHOW lineage mentioned this thread recently... and I dig it! I am excited to see the different stuff people come up with as new topics are posted.

This is some progress on Virgo. I've got the weird Leo/Virgo cusp birthday thing (aug 23rd), so I'm going to try and rock out a Leo as well. Some nice stuff so far from others.

@derekdedgell - I'm not sure what that bull is drinking, but a bull that drinks his green shit from a straw, can party with me any day.

virgo and a little Astraea sprinkled in for zest

Just to get a story going I'm using the following from wikipedia's entry about Virgo (under mythology): Astraea was the Greek goddess of innocence and the administration of law. Sickened by the wars of men, she was the last of the celestial beings to leave the earth for the heavens and is often depicted with the wings that allowed her angelic ascension to the stars. It is said that Zeus placed her amongst the stars as the Virgo constellation along with her scales of justice to depict the constellation Libra.

I'll just be using the above story to channel "Virgo."

whiskey Your image made my jaw drop. Literally.

kdillon I like both comps too. But I actually really like the second one more. They seem like theyre spread out across the sky like they really are--the constellations I mean. But I like the tree and river. Its great comp. Are those their real shapes?

derek omg this is awesome lol. I once read that taurus are responsible with money? It reminds me of that cause he's wearing a suit drinking overpriced drink lol. Man I love it.

whiskey sour Very impressive dude, it's clear you've been working hard on this and it's paying off, great work.

Watch out for your composition though. Theres a few tangents happening which can be easily avoided and fixed, like the way some of the characters have been cropped off the image (the scorpions claw in the lower right is an example). The dudes scales touching the edge of the canvas too is something you want to avoid.

Take a read of this, i may be of some use to you - http://emptyeasel.com/2008/11/18/avo...watch-out-for/
