your perception needs to be trained aswell...

another example is when i read about the usage of color in the painting from life thread in the traditional subforum... especially what ron lemmen and david darrow had to say. sometimes we (at least me) just start to see and realize things weve been told are there, and suddenly you cant even avoid it.

youre 7 months in... i dropped hobbies ive been into longer. dont make up excuses for not beeing where youd like to be... just work on getting there.

Point made, but I'm not making excuses, I'm saying it how it is from the perspective of someone who's been told that since they have trouble distinguishing greys that they will never understand painting and has had their confidence shat on by several people and is looking for a helping hand.

I'm not trying to be cranky, but I sincerely dislike being told I'm making excuses when I'm trying my best to overcome the hurdles that I've been facing.
My best is all I can give and all I've done is try.

If you thik you have a serious vision problem, that's easily answered - get your eyes checked. If you don't have a physical colorblindness problem, you can be trained. Some can get trained even with colorblindness. People who tell you the discouraging stuff are all too often full of shit. Remember, there's a lot of people out there who can be a down their nose full of shit types, even those with some knowledge and authority.

Grow a spine and tell them to go fly a kite, and do your honest best for some time. There's no other way to find out whether you can do it or not.. try it 50 times, and of you still fail at the very same spot, maybe there's a problem, and you need a different approach. After you fail at something 1000th time, ok, maybe you are hitting the limit of what you're able to do... or maybe you just need a break.

Also, best long term encouragement comes from the inside, and from pushing your limits and seeing you progressed to the next step in the process. Don't rely on external encouragement too much. Treat it as a bonus, because you never know when you;ll get it and when you won't. Internal encouragement, once you learn how to do it, you can always count on.

I wont give up yet XD
That's exactly what those exercises are for!

I think a lot of it is down to lack of knowledge. If you don't know something, you're probably going to miss it, like my black hair issue. Always thought it was just black and greys (lol) until I tried it and was like "Wait, there's RED in here?"
I will get it checked anyway, due a check up about the /other/ eye problem soon. May aswell get it all done in one go.

The discouraging thing was a huge problem for me, since it was by an artist who had tonnes of years behind them. So it felt very "Well I know what I'm doing, why don't you?"

Grow a spine and tell them to go fly a kite,
Oh believe me I did. They bothered me two weeks into drawing to tell me "Why don't you have a grasp on anatomy yet?"
Should've been a good indicator to stop listening there.

That's exactly something that I need to work on. My internal "Encouragement" goes on the lines of "Oh yeah don't try that. You've failed for the past 7 months, you're not going to get it right now."
I just kinda ignore it, tell that voice to stfu and get on with it.
I think I definitely need to study more. I find that when I study then draw something, it comes out nice and I feel satisfied with it.
If I keep drawing just random pieces, I find it comes out worse, I figure it's because I haven't studied enough so I don't have the knowledge of how to do these steps that I start taking which is why it looks worse.

I just need refresher courses...all the time XD.

Precisely. Got a day off today, so I'm gonna try and crack to it. See how long it takes before I get frustrated. Hah.

EDIT; Now I remember the other thing I wanted to ask.
Is it common practice to use different line colours? Like, say I'm doing red clothing, doing an almost black lines (If you're using lines, I know in rendering it's like life, life doesn't have lines.) would be wise whereas then when I move onto skin it could be like, brown-ish depending on the tone I'm going for?
It's puzzled me for a while XD I zoomed in on some works that had lines and the lines seemed to differ.
