Zelda_Geek: Yeah im aware of it, I think it might be because im focusing a bit too hard on getting it to fit the rectangle guidlines ive been using and its givin it a sorta squished look.

Damien Levs:Thanks ive been meaning to do more proper still-lifes lately just can't find anything interesting to draw at the moment.

Sasha Devina:No idea how I keep myself motivated XD just sorta draw as much as I can.

Have'nt been able to draw much the last few days, been busy.

    More terrible cup drawings

Good work on your studies so far, in your digitals, especially these skulls I've noticed you're trying to push the darks to pure black. Stay away from black, it's not something that actually appears in nature, and it makes things look very odd, in terms of value range. Anyway keep studying, you're getting better.

    Smile

Feels like forever since I was last on here new forum design looks decent in my opinion.

I'm gonna be posting alot more now as ive quit college to self teach myself, I wasnt really learning much there and I was learning more at home, they only really had 2 courses mildly suitable for me to go onto animation which I don't really want to do and Art and Design which was more building and textures and that sort of stuff with a bit of drawing fitted in, which aside from clay im really not into that sorta stuff that much.

So im gonna be uploading alot now that I got the time to update every day.

btw im not using the attachment manager for these first pics I can't see any of the old ones yet so im guessing its the same for the new ones as well.
Im uploading a double of one of the pics in the attachement manager to see if its seeable or not.
Gotten up to skull's in the bridgeman book wanted to try using something different then pen for the last 2 pages.

Sketch of my dog the outline of him was done from copying but then he got pissed at me for making to much noise and started to move so I had to copy the rest of the fur and the eye from different angles and guessing.

Psychobuddy: Thanks im actually experimenting with the black at the moment im trying not to make it too dark but im messing with it a bit to see what sticks.

edit:Ah good the new attachments show up.

    Hiya!
I see a lot of improvement in this thread! Great job! Your hand studies look really really good compared to the first page
For that last picture you posted of that guy, something about hit bottom half just seems a bit off. I think that his legs are either too short or too skinny. His feet are definitely too small. A human's foot is usually as long as their forearm and the length of their head. In general, you can get away with drawing hands and feet a little bigger than normal but not the other way around! So watch out for that, I tend to do the same. x[ Just make sure you pay lots of attention to proportions :]

Keep up the improvement! You're doing a great job

letsgopangolin:Thanks I actually did that drawing to see which parts of the body I need to work on more, also a few of the problems with the lower body I rushed over a bit as I was getting bored, I have the attention span of a carrot . Beautiful work on your profile pic btw.

Thinking of redrawing these bridgman heads im not really happy with how they turned out.

Oh yeah, I never thought of using observational drawings to observe ourselves... interesting!
To avoid the short legs from a short attention span, you should draw the entire outline of the body (or the gesture) first. Then you have a bit of a skeleton to work on. That was you don't have to pay as much attention to proportions and whatnot and focus on details instead
And thanks! I drew it over a year ago and sadly haven't had the time or inspiration to do a picture as detailed :/ Maybe someday soon I'll do another one...

Anyway, nice newer studies, and I am giving you extra brownie points for the deku baba because zelda is AWESOME!!
On a more serious note, don't be afraid to layer up when using traditional media! It'll add a richness to your coloring.

Yay, good to see you keeping up on your studies still a lot of work to be done on form, I would try doing things like that ear you just did but keep rendering it until it matches your reference. might take a while but will really will in understanding how form interacts with light and so on, and that skill will apply to everything you do in the future

There's been some definite improvement in pretty much all areas since I was here last, so nice job!

Learning to spot the more subtle turns in form that I think Ian is addressing will definitely come with practice - just keep doing still life studies and studies from photos, trying to get your drawing/painting as close as you can to what you're seeing and you'll get better each time.

That's a bad picture to be practicing an ear from -- It blurs out too much to correctly read the forms. I'd drop that study and try to find one that is a bit easier to see what's going on, personally. Also, don't forget to tone your background so you're not painting on pure white. (Fill it with a medium/neutral gray and then paint. It'll help you to see your values more accurately because you're not constantly comparing everything to the lightest value there is -- white. With a neutral bg, you'll be able to compare your values in either direction and see how much lighter or darker something should be compared to what would be the middle ground, so to speak. From pure white, you have nowhere to go but down and that can make rendering form difficult, especially while learning.)

Keep up with the still life pieces, they'll help you a lot. (Watch your shapes, though. A couple things look like they're melting or lopsided by a bit, like the larger pot in the first one. Try to get your base drawing right first before shading it in.)

The hands look a bit squished (vertically somewhat stumpy), but not too shabby over all otherwise. (Some nice detailing going on in there on the 03 one.)

Watch your proportions on your faces -- you have a tendency to crop your chin areas to almost nonexistent under the mouth. Give your chin/jaws a bit more substance (breathing room), shift your mouths up a hair, and you'll notice a difference with your faces. Also, the ear is a bit on the large side. You're definitely improving with portraiture, though, compared to a few pages back so keep it up.

Hey man , those last hand studies are really good!
For that island study you're doing, It's good that you've put down the basic colors first. But I would recommend not to render it very detailed from top to bottom, but try adding detail/values evenly
across the whole painting step-by step. That way you can keep track of the whole image and see mistakes earlier in the progress.
I hope this makes sense :p i'm a bit tired..

Anyway, you're doing great and your progress is noticeable. Keep at it!

Yes, the pictures with the cups is better than the one you had with the ear -- The edges well defined, there's a lot of subtle things going on with reflections/lighting that will challenge you, and the shapes are simple, but the perspective will be a bit tricky. It's one that will push you a bit and give you good practice with your rendering abilities.

Also, nice job on the hands again. Practice is definitely paying off.

For your still life pieces, you should try smoothing your shading a bit in certain areas to help bump the quality of your drawings to the next level. (You can do it with a tissue wrapped over the tip of your finger or with a Q-Tip if the area is small and then smudging areas that would be smooth to help even out your pencil strokes there. Experiment with it a bit and see what different textures you can achieve by either blending strokes or leaving them be.)

jarkuzy: thnks for the crit but I completely forgot about that island study lol
I learnt not to detail it from top to bottom soon after beggining that I got to the island and had to keep correcting it because it was really mishapen.

Your rendering has gotten crazy good! Makes those still lifes and hands look very nice. Your biggest problem right now is no doubt chins, like Riley Stark said. Try to draw a head from ref, then scan it and overlay it over the ref in photoshop. You might be surprised at the errors that were invisible to you a second before. (I tried this yesterday, I did too short chins too!)

I'm subscribing, wanna see where this is going!

You really do put a lot of work in when you post that is really admirable. i could learn a thing or two from you!
    1. How much time do you spend drawing?
    2. Have you tried using pen? Many artists recommend switching to pen for a few months to appreciate not being able to take back a line. It really helps your line quality go up!
Do a lot of work and your work will be as good as your ambitions.

    Eternal Apprentice:
1.varies a lot for me because I get lazy and unmotivated easily, I usually aim to draw for a good 6 or 7 hours a day considering im not going to college anymore but I rarely ever get round to drawing for that long.

2.i do draw in pen occasionally I might try that month long challenge though seems like it would make constructional drawings a pain in the ass though.

    IsaacEs:thanks!

Just an update of some recent stuff might post another update tonight.

Judging by the amount of posts you make I wouldn't be surprised if you had carpel tunnel. Keep up the hard work mate.
