Awesome chestnuts! Wish i found interesting things on my walks.. probably just need to keep my eyes open..
The ostrich is real cool. Some very interesting edge handling going on, just be sure to always remember the skull and to make sure you dont leave your drawings skull-less. As it seems that the ostrich ends just behind the eyes, which may just be the camera angle, but adding a couple of feathers to hint that there is something there is always good

Your precision in catching minute details still amazes me

as for brushes- my advice would be download a big pack of custom brushes and have fun exploring. I haven't used photoshop for a while but i think this guy's brushes were nice.

But I think you’re right about adding some feathers. Even if they just have a brain as big as a walnut…it’s still a brain! Thanks for visiting!

Just a bunch of body gestures today. It’s my weak side, really! I haven’t been doing it for a while and I recognize that I’ve lost the grip just during a week. I have to do this much often for sure. Also I think it’s hard to estimate the sketches to the paper size. Some parts get too big or too small and in the end it doesn’t fit on the paper or just gets twisted. Haha…at least it’s fun!

So this weekend I attended a sketch class for two days. Here are some of the results. Mostly I worked with pencil but I also tried charcoal in some.

Some of the sketches of the drawing class are looking quite good! I like the sitting poses in the second row most and the last standing pose in the third row.
And I love the digital photo studies you showed on page 3. Amazing stuff there! Very good work with the brushes and it looks like you get the colours right. I'm sure you're going the right way combining a lot of traditional sketches with digital studies. And don't forget the fun. Keep it up!

You're doing very good, and you're doing all the right things. Just keep doing those studies, and of course throw in work from your imagination. You're going to do great!

You're definitely showing some real improvement! A couple of the lifedrawings from that latest set are really nice. On the quicker gestures - try to draw through the figure a bit and find form instead of line. Michael Hampton has some great examples (his book is excellent, BTW) - instead of trying to find the outline of the form, find the masses that make it up, and the general thrust of the pose.

So today I wanted to try new brushes instead of always using the round one. I was going for the “mandatory onion” as it looks like it’s a common thing to draw in the beginning. I went to the kitchen and opened the fridge and yes, there was an onion and some other stuff as well. Here’s the fridge maniac!

Oh wow! Those are looking really good! Got to love those custom brushes! Your renderings are looking tight(as usual)! Its good that you are painting from life. Its crazy hard when you dont have the good ol color picker to use lol. Oh and those designs are all orginal drawings to help teach me how to draw objects from different angles (Front and back). You have to first draw them in draft view(side and top for me) and then translate them to the grid. They were all drawn freehand with no ruler. Lots of fun Keep up the great work! If you need any more advice on perspective let me know!

I'm impressed by the last still-lives! You have a good eye for color, did you time those?

I also like that you're giving gestures the respect they deserve It shows improvement from page to page especially the longer ones poses. My advice would be to do 10-15 second gestures and focus on line economy, when you don't have a lot of time to sketch you will avoid passing over lines, as well as boost your line confidence. Another thing would be to draw with pens, as they create permanent marks.

Great still lifes! My one crit is that it's a good idea to drop in the colour of the surface it's sitting on, like you did with the eggplant, because you can often get some reflected light/colour off the surface... also, the shadows underneath them look a little half-assed in comparison to the rather nice blending you've got going on in the fruits and vegetables themselves. =)

I’ll try some fast sketches again, they where some really nasty things to do and last time they got incredible ugly. But I think I might be ready for a second try. Thanks for visiting!

Simple studies for today. If a man is hard to draw, think about how hard it must be to draw a horse! They have FOUR legs, gah!!!

It's really good that you are practicing people as well as horses. It seems that humans and horses are somewhat engrained in the human consciousness to the point that if there is something wrong with their anatomy you realize it immediately, so getting those two forms down is really important. Your horses are looking really good, they seem to have weighted form like you can really tell their weight as they move. The humans you seem to have the same problem that I do were you don't make them look lengthy enough. Like they are too squat and not sinuous enough. Granted some people are like that, but not all of them. Keep up the good work.

excellent fruits and horses, the horses are very fluid and the fruits very.. fruity.... Really digging the improvement, keep up the good work. Your lines on the gestures are very fluid but try some opacity based on pressure, and try emphasising some lines over others, it really helps developing a style.
