Cool paintovers guys! thanks so much, very helpful.

So yeah, those thumbnails I did, with the color etc, were just to give myself a rough road map. So now that I have my map in place, and general ideas ready to go, I am indeed slowing down, and taking my time and firepower to one area at a time. I'll post an update soon, but I've essentially done what you two did in your paintovers already - sat down, did the general perspective lines cleanly, locked in some of the more major line work, and started rendering the floors with some cleaner contrast and a dark feel - the color is really helping there.

I'm excited to get everything drawn and clean now, especially after so many rough drafts! The help and advice I've been getting in this forum have been really great, I really appreciate it! I'll post an update soon!

    Update: Wip#3

So as I said, I'm going into the line work and final forms now. Still need to render most things, but I've got the lower foliage/ground pretty done for the forest. The trees, building, and wall are still in their rough stages, but the lines are there. currently working the road. House and it's area will have lots of wildflowers, and more moss, shuttered door, a tree growing out the roof, etc.

The house seems a bit out of proportion, like a toy, I'd get some ref to enrich it a bit and adjust it's size.

Are your black lines on a separate layer?

    @freiheit:
yeah, lines are on a seperate layer, just guiding my forms when I eventually get to the rendering of those parts.
So you're thinking the house looks too small? I was hoping the size would help add to the epic-ness of the wall/trees. maybe when the human is back in the picture it will help solidify the scale. The human will be quite smaller than the one in the thumbnail, scaled to fit that house's doorway.

I have to say, more then size, it's the design of the house that makes it look a bit like a bit simplistic. Don't put to much time on this, but breaking the shape into something more then the classic square and triangle + perspective would definitely make it more believable.

other then that, smaller objects around the house (everything is big, the tiles, the gate, the trees, the rocks) would probably, in addition to breaking down the form, help with the scale.

best of luck to you on your test,

    hey!
I don't think that to stablish scale like you say you would need to add the house, the human figure should be enough to stablish the scale of the ruins. Unless they specifically asked you to put the house there.
I just find it funny that someone would have built a cottage-like house next to a mysterious temple entrance.
    Anyways just my humble opinion.
    Good luck with your test.

lol, yeah, maybe! or a trading post specializing in ancient relics.

yeah, my previous test I didn't include anything like that, for the same logic. but after reading the brief more carefully, they do mention abandoned structures a few times, as well as the megaliths, so they wanted em' both

I finished the test, and submitted. Thanks for your help guys! Here's my final image:
