    Tonicarty's Sketchbook

    Kia ora!

So I decided that today would be a good day to start uploading pictures I've been doing for university in order to hopefully see improvement one day and get further feedback from you guys in what my obvious weaknesses and strengths are.

I may upload some recreation pictures also as they come but lately I've had a minor inspiration outdoes skill block and haven't had any successful sketches.

I'm currently studying online at the Academy of Art University, doing a BFA majoring in Illustration. First year, first semester, let's see how it goes!

    Week Three Exercises & Assignment:

Exercise 3.1 - Print off the lines and shade in a cartoon character using the 5 value system. We were meant to find and shade it according to the basic shapes.

Exercise 3.2 - Come up with a series of extremely quick thumbnail sketches for next still life drawing. I chose the top left picture on the second image as in the others at least one item was completely in shadow.

Assignment 3.1 - Draw and render 3 pure white items with ellipses in them, from life. Photo reference shown.

As of right now (4.12pm 20/02/2012), any advice on Assignment 3.1 would be great as I still have one resubmission I can upload for it.

Grades thus far: Credit on all exercises, B+ on both assignments.

    Week Four Assignment:

Assignment 4.1 - Draw and add quick shadow tones to drapery from life, reference shown. It's not meant to be fully rendered yet, that's the next assignment, I just had to block in any shadow planes.

    Also, Assignment 3.1 received a B+ also.

So we had a less boring assignment to look at for ILL 133 recently, this week we have to clone ourselves using photoshop. First picture is a draft and second is the one I submitted.

So that's me for you. I tried hard to make it realistic and realised this is actually quite a difficult assignment (for me at least, not used to using Photoshop for actually editing photos).

Haha, I looked through your SB and was like "looks like AAU assignments.." then I went back and read the full first post and was like "oh yeah duh" lol. I'm in my first year also. Nice head render, it's definitely an improvement from your first charcoal stuff

Here was a fun sketch I did for someone else. It's meant to be Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler. It took roughly an hour (maybe a little more) with a 6B graphite pencil. I just worked on it in 10 minute segments every so often as stress relief. None of it is completely finished (obviously not the hair or clothes) but I kind of like the messiness

The Entire of Figure Drawing FND112 Semester's Work (roughly in order)

All on newsprint so full value scale isn't there.

Various techniques for quick sketches 10 minutes or less:

Anything above 10 minutes long (can't remember the specifics for these sorry):

This one was meant to be slightly exaggerated but just became messy:

    Copying others' work:

    Body Parts:

    2 hours drawing a friend:

Final Sketches (approx 4 hours each):

I definitely improved during this class, let's keep this up!
