Well, I thought I would start a sketchbook as extra motivation to get me to draw. I'll try and make it daily, but then again, I make no promises.

Like all good things, this starts with a mech. Unfortunately, it starts with a very sketchy one, but I like the design, so it will get better.

Well, this one is for Sammy since he asked what I thought a thumper would look like. Honestly, I can't remember the book's descriptions too well, so I just made it up according to what I thought would work best. I only designed the internal mechanism for the thumper, since I can't match Sammy's rendering or design abilities in any way, and its just to give him an idea of what might work anyways.

I chose an air ram design, which just works over and over to pound a hollow cylindrical hammer into the ground. This would be powerful and create a strong vibration, while allowing the thumper to be slim and portable. It is also fairly simple. The elongated shape would also allow it to be buried easily into the sand, which I think was how they were used in the book (correct me if I am wrong)

hmmmm..the first one you posted looked like you had been inspired by evengelion's "eva units" or rahxephon's mecha designs....they are quite similar.

What I like about it is that it looks like technology that would've origionally been import to Arrakis for their utilitarian and spice processing needs. Something the closer fremen tribes would'e adopted long long ago (like a big hydrollic) and warped it (within their manufacturing caves) to their needs.
The size is really nice, more on-par with the book. Portable and not too aquard to transport.
very cleaver and realistically designed, it's nice that you stayed away from sci-fi gagetry too.

I wouldn't change a thing, I would just maybe add a pin or 'spike'. Something sharp, because all they had to do was throw it in the ground and it would stick and start working.

I like your monky-mecha thing, you should do a nice finished ink of it. Incorporate those nice articulate details and funcions in the joints/segments like you did with that 2nd piece you inked, that would look nice.

Getting the hang of OC. But color still isn't my thing. Shoulda overpainted the blue BG with something more fitting, but I got lazy.

trying some anatomy stuff. Went for the superhero proportions, but I'm not too happy with it. Realism has a distinct draw.

Well, since its supposed to be a daily sketchbook, I thought I'de post something just to keep it regular. Its the prelim for my mech coloring job. The basics are layed down, and I just need to do all the work now. THe feet are rather uncovered, so I figure I will put in some trees down there, maybe some troops, or an explosion. Might not make it an action scene though.

Hehe, well, I love the EVA designs, so I did my own. I imagined a fusion between an angel and an Eva, and here's what I got. (an extension of the previous designs, but it evolved quite a bit.)

I ran it through the diffusion filter in PS, and it gave it a neat feel.

I need to restart this, just as something else to get me back into drawing regularly. It's amazing what going to college can do to your productivity.

Just an update from the past few months.

A very surprised stealth commando with a very funky left elbow.


Some plasma rifle concepts for a mod I was in for a while. I personally like the grinder, but the rest suck.


A big tough skull armored badguy with a giant sword. Very generic, but I liked it, though not enough to finish. It was a redesign of an earlier work.

Mech that I was doing which I got very sick and tired of. It was one of those pics that I disliked so badly that it sent me into a drawing slump. It just forced me to come to grips with the fact that I don't like my style, mostly because I'm not good enough to pull it off to my liking. Bitch bitch bitch, etc etc.

Magic Man: Yes, I do need to work on rendering. That my one weakness. One of many. Though, to be fair, everything I draw looks a lot better on paper than it does scanned in, which is what I get for buying a lexmark printer scanner combo and not splurging on something better. But yeah, excuses excuses.

Black: Yes, 'tis I. And thanks, that's what I aim for. Hopefuly I'll get better at it too.

Here's an update on the above design. Finished and with some quick colors. I just wanted to get it done for the sake of the concept, so this is about as far as I'll take it.

I really like your mech designs, they are really impressive, have a really good sense of form about them. Really liking your line work as well, your sb may finally convince me start learning to draw mech along with realism. Keep doing those anatomy studies.

A little update before I hopefully get into a regular sketchbook. There was more than this, but half of it sucked balls, and the other half was done for a freelance job, so I can't show it. Don't worry, some of it sucked balls too, so no big loss.
