I CANNOT PAINT DETAILED ENVIRONMENTS. Anyone know of good environment tutorials or books that go in depth about only environments...? I'm freaking desperate cause i spent all day working on environments and i found myself a slave to the reference and was unable to understand the forms light and color. i pretty much wasted a whole day. Or this was a great day because I found out what I realllllly struggle with, knowing I can improve if I practice and seek understanding. but yes, any help would be nice.

    Redoing Morgane

So I'm redoing Morgane (from the arthurian tales in an ancient egyptian setting). Here's some roughs thinking about what tells the story best. I felt b was the one that told the story the best so i tried not to give up too fast on the others by trying different stuff on em. that stuff just became noise to the main story. hey man,
that last portrait is incredible! how do you do that? D:
I think the colors in that last environment study are a bit too light, the trees have an almost black shadow
Also, I think the painting misses tension, and cleanliness . The whole picture falls apart imo, because you didn't get the horizontal line under the treeline straight.. this should be a very sharp line

For environment tutorials you should check this guy out; Shaddy ; hes a magician if it comes to enviros!!.. I'v learned a ton of him
and Sry if i've been too harsh lol :p

haha, no that wasn't too harsh... I was super sloppy with that environment and it shows. it was like a 15 minute environment study mainly for colors but still, it needs to be done right otherwise why do it to develop bad habits. thanks I'll check it out! Thank you so much for giving me something to study. I'll be sure to get on it today. gogogogoogog

    Comic test page.

Here's an underpainting of a test page for a comic I'm working on. It is obviously starcraft 2 inspired. really trying to break out of my comfort zone.. will be working on this comic for the majority of the break along with environments and concept work once my books arrive. Just simply saying that after Christmas I will be studying color more in depth, doing many, many movie still paintings and portraiture in color... The goal is to be able to paint realistic environments in harmony with subject matter of the illustration. This post is more of a note to myself so I don't go back to doing what is easy for me so that I don't progress. Cheers.

    Edit- My books arrived.

    christmas study

did this study of trevor claxton's mechish chick but made it more festive/worse. rofl. Anyways, I felt I had a pretty good grasp of how mech rendering works by the time I was finished with the left arm, from the viewer's perspective. It was a great lesson in terms of keeping shapes and edges very precise and clean and to always think that edges are beveled and such. Helped me understand edge control and has made me much more attentive to understanding edges, light, color and value. also, learned to apply the "box" idea more. What I didn't do much of was incorporating textures. I would need to spend another 2-3 hours on texturing when I've spent like another 4 hours on getting the base forms down on the right and lower parts (and the face! OH GOSH that face.. terrible. It was suppose to be an elf. suuuuuuper rushed.) Name: punk cyborg chick full body.jpg

    another crappy environment

this took forever to get to where it is now.... -.- I'm sooooo bad with environments.... ugh. I think for my next attempt I'm going to use the lasso and gradient tools... seems like I could control my shapes and values easier that way. ANWAYS. here is this piece of crap. Name: landscape.jpg

thanks man, spent a LOT of time problem solving on this piece. I hope I do win something since my wacom tablet is giving out. It would be nice not to have to pan around the screen to paint. feels like running with one leg. hope all is well man. I'll be posting regularly now since this thing is finished.
