    Morganne update

obviously inspired by Leynedecker. going to leave this design pretty simple since anymore would make this image way too busy and confusing.

Spent the day life painting, getting a christmas tree and painting this thing.

Today was a good day just in general, had fun; and I am seeing improvement both in my skill as an artist and my mood. Anyways, here's the progress of this concept. Forgot to say it is suppose to be Morganne Le Fay in the egyptian culture. My process for picking the type of finish for this was wanting something in-between a 2d and 3d style, but more on the 2d-graphic side. So I chose Leyendecker's style since he really does just that (yes, it does vary...). I love how it almost feels wind waker-ish. ANYWAYS, here it is about 3/4 done. I think I may actually finish this one. Feel free to point out anything awkward or that detracts from the story of Morganne Le Fay. Cheers!Name: morganne for dan warren's contest moved around 2 small merged.jpg

    Progress of Morganne Wip

decided there was too much white and not enough value range/mid tones. Plus that staff/bird cage thing was just too close to the wall and an arch did not diffuse the tension. I think this is the best design decision. anyways, going to bed. it's late. XDName: morganne for dan warren's contest moved around 2 graphic designy small.jpg

Thanks for the kind and constructive reply. I'd love to do something like that but I'm having a hard time understanding what you mean... Could you give me an example so that I know more what you are thinking? I mean, experimental art is quite broad and I'm kind of unsure what you mean. Do you mean doing something that is less of the classical/representational approach to art? Just some direction would be awesome so that I can try what you are talking about. Again, thanks and hope to hear from you soon!

Ah, thanks! Must make that foundation stronger! Oh, yes, I do want to be concept artist... my dream... *sigh*. AND YES! LOOK FORWARD TO MORE CONCEPT/ILLUSTRATION WORK! I just finished a Morganne Le Fay concept piece from the Arthurian Tales in an ancient egyptian setting. I hope you approve. haha But I will be doing much, much more in the very near future!

good portrait studies maybe watch the necks a bit they can be a bit thick and stiff looking and a bit flat, necks are very complex from the looks of things so guess maybe target some anatomy studies to figure out whats going on under the skin. Like how you handle chalk and pay attention to darks and lights and forms.

Well, when I take a look at your sketchbook, and I see mostly (very nice) portraits and life drawings.
I think you have a lot of potential, and are capable of much much more..
From what i've seen on here you've got a very strong sense of form and structure, and just like you said in my sketchbook, I would like to see these skills used in digital work.
If you want to work in this field, I think, you need a wide spectrum of skills.
Maybe do some environment studies, and study different subjects such as vehicles, architecture, costumes , fauna, flora, etc...
And yes, something less classical/representational would be awesome too You could try working with aquarel, ink or w/e, just try things, and maybe you'll find something you like
What I wanna say is, try to leave your comfort zone. If something isn't going well you can study and practice it.
That way you will get less 'afraid' to draw other things, and your field of interest will expand.
I hope this makes sense lol, its just what came to my mind (:
    cheers!

Couldn't agree with both of you any more! Those are great observations from both of you and I will be studying my Vandoerpoel and Bridgeman for necks as well as drawing more concepts. I will also be trying to find ways to paint like I paint traditionally (charcoal is also considered paint according to Loomis...and many other great artists...)

don't have enough time in class or outside of class to practice long drawings or studies at the moment..or concept art... finals are coming up... XD So much I want to do, just so little time. Will be taking fewer classes next semester to practice cast drawing and more in depth longer drawings and concept art. stay tuned! oh, and here's a life drawing dump... the ones that look less refined are 1 hour poses... the one that looks more refined is a 2 hour pose. thanks for viewing and critting if you do crit. I like the way you bring yourself into your every portrait
drawing and painting. Fascinating results up ahead, a freshly
born sprite relaxing on the Moon, not even a black coffee could
ruin your lovely mood. You already got some very good advices
from some very good people, and the mixture of their words with
your motivating will power, creates a destructive night flashing
gun powder. How you do your things, you should keep at secret
right now, but later when things evolve more, you could gave up
bits and things about your true ways. I feel bouncy and chubby
all in a sudden, feeling happy and pleasurfull, I can see the
consistence and strong work ethic, the clinic that you’ve
put on in this year. Sky is the limit for you. The sky.

Some good stuff in here! Your lifedrawings, especially, are looking really solid - the only thing I'd note is that the base proportions seem off here and there, especially the heads - they're often a bit small.

@Revidescent--yeah, eek, proportions I still have to work on. AND YES, I ALWAYS MAKE THE HEADS TOO FREAKING SMALL. hahahah.. it always happens. T.T This upcoming life drawing session I will not make em too small. thanks for dropping by and for the critique. I will remember this crit while drawing.

Even when you rushed, you managed to pull of a
Tchaikovsky influence. I like the feeling and the mass
that you gave to his hair and the determined eyes looking
toward the sky. Quality work and good pencil control.

    Another life drawing dump...

I liked the flow this one has... really working on making the character have more flow/life/whatever-you-want-to-call-it. Also loving that s curve through the midline... had lots of problems with this one and unfortunately didn't have time to resolve em (problems with proportions and making the figure flow more...). about an hour and 20 minute pose.

I don't really see any problems but maybe my eye isn't that trained as it should be. I personally think it's great. Keep at it.

thanks, i was having problems with the left arm from our point of view. along with the proportions of the right leg again from our view. And a lot of edges need to be lost or hardened to how how form is working... Plus the overall design is pretty loose. Just needs to be tightened up. Anyways, here's a portrait... satisfied with thumbnail comp.

will be working on this after tomorrow during winter break. Basically the story is an alternative to the origins of Medusa. Medusa is abducted by a snake god (takes place in south american culture) and the snake god, out of coveting her hair, fuses with the hair in trying to obtain it but instead fuses to her head as hair....replacing the hair. The snake wears the pants in the relationship since he is quite a bit bigger and more mobile.

haha, I can't paint environments from imagination. my knowledge of color is the worst. time to do some color studies and environment studies. worked on a piece today that had an environment in it. FAILED SO HARD. I at least know what to work on. time to study up on how color works. Cheers!
