    Hells high wall

    Hi all,

I'm new here and wanted to show a new concept/matte painting piece I've recently completed.

To be honest I'm not sure this is the correct forum for this image?

This is a picture I've had inside my head for years now. I've been hugely inspired by Hieronymus Bosch and Wayne Barlowe, two fantastic artists, for as long as I can remember.

I wanted to create an instantly recognisable vision of the "classical" HELL, and as a result of this I've used multiple photographic sources from my travels for various elements to keep it grounded in reality (Well, as believable as a place like Hell could be!).

It was originally intended to be a quick concept piece, but it evolved into a sort of hybrid matte painting somewhere along the way and ran off with itself. It is about 50% image manipulation and 50% hand drawn with a mouse (Not recommended!).

As always here, crits are more than welcome.

Anyway, it's good to finally be a part of this community!

    Marc

EDIT: There's now a HIGH RESOLUTION version if you click the link to my BLOG in my sig- also a 2D anim of it, to bring it to life a bit.

I just watch that little pan you did of this with the 2d effects, how did you do that?! Probably isn't simple to explain, but way cool way to show off your work!

    Hi all,

Aye, thanks very much for the comments.

It's basically a lot photo manipulation and a lot of mouse drawn (NOT recommended!) filler areas.
I only got a WACOM pad AFTER I'd drawn this- don't ask why lol... it would've been so much easier to have STARTED this with the pad..!!!
All the archways and little temples and layers of cliffs going into the distance are just that- layers in Photoshop.
By the time I'd finished there was literally hundreds of them to build up depth with a LOT of masking areas off etc.
It was all very time consuming but it was good to have a solid project to get my teeth into.
Again chaps- thank you very much for your comments, it's appreciated..!!!

    Hehe,
cheers for your comments chaps- appreciated!
Aye, when I get time, I want to do a Heaven version, although the "structure" would be a bit of a challenge.. as soon as you go for "buildings", then you ground it in reality somewhat and it'd appear earthly I reckon...
I'd want to make it all cloudy and floaty lite lol..!!!
I'll do one at some point aye!

Well as far as structures in heaven go, you have a throne and a gate to start with, oh and a staircase, so plenty of lofty forced perspective heights with oodles of fog/mist enveloping the scene, I think you can pull it off with panash.

    Good luck
