well man, you seem to have an overflow of ideas.....i would suggest to you that you should keep 2 sketchbooks like I did when i started learning - have 1 sketchbook for letting your head loose with crazy ideas like your giant bug, the dude with the bull mask, etc etc.....and the other one for studies - like your perspective diagrams and your study of the trux....

These studies are really important, and you should do em on a regular basis. Your at the stage now where you really cant afford to neglect the basic theories - there are a million paths to learning art, but to have a sound practice you MUST have a good grasp of basic stuff - even though you may think you nkow perspective, light, colour, anatomy, etc.......there is ALWAYS someone who knows it better than you!! There is always potential to learn.

So keep at it - dont lose your fresh ideas, eventually they will be the most important thing. Although as Marko Djurdevik (sp?) says - a good character design is usually a simple, unexxagerated one. Another reason to learn anatomy so you can pull off convincing human forms. Keep at it man - you have potential.

Hey misfit, the hand and the chair on the last one looks really good. all i can say is, more life drawing!! i never realized how much it does really help, it makes you concentrate on how one shape relates to the other. and another big one, contours! that helps a load and makes you be more patient with drawing (big problem i have). goodluck, keep it up and dont stop posting!

This stuff is cool! it seems like we're opposites... you're better at 'just drawing stuff' than at observation (no offence) you should check out the drawing tutuorials by fredflickstone on the learning part of the forum. You use tone too heavily, especially on the lighter toned hand, i understand you're trying to get the veins to pup out, but watch more carfully at you hand, it really isn't that dark... you should also consider working on your proportions. your color stuff is cool too, just that you overexagerate contrasts, the punk gobloin is fine, but the big pirate bothers me...

the watercolor painting is awesome! -did you just have a lesson on watercolor washes in school? If you ever decide to refine it, make the black darker with black gouache for example.

the ink mushroom is AWESOME i love it!

And the stoned guy: he's really well done too. If ya want to refine the shading and make it feel smoother, you might consider smudging the pencil with kitchen roll paper very carefully. (and spray it with fikative once you're done)!

    keep working!:chug:

    thanks for posting man

yah im realy working on my still lifes right now... the reason that last hand is so dark is because form told me to work with more values, and so i did...

and yes that watercolor was done in school

i did use a smudgy paper stump for him(it just scanned bad), and my art teacher sprayed it for me

    ------------------------

Today was a very poopy drawing day, not bad idea day tho...
    sorry for my poopyness :bash:

so much better!! agree or disagree?

The only thing id recommend for the pose is to have a go at putting the front leg towards us, in perspective. It may be a bit of a challenge to construct the foreshortening but it would look cool. But if you wanna leave it how it is i think that works too.

Now take that design and start adding details - but decide where you want the focus to be. Put more details there and less details the further from that point you go. Ie make face very detailed but leave legs plain, even faded slightly.

    Remember all details functional!

Good luck, look forward to seeing the rezultz!

Good work here. You definately have talent.
Maybe you should experiment with some looser brushstrokes, check out the drawings from justin sweet, justinsweet.com, try to draw from the elbow and shoulder instead of from the wrist.
    Cheers,

    Erik

Hey, goodjob on doing a still life, you should do as much life drawing as possible! well to crit the cups, all i can say is to mirror the drawing to see whats wrong. we cant always see the problem with the drawing until we mirror it, you may notice some parts are tilted too much, etc. I say you work on contour drawing, that means to draw only the "lines" around the cup and no shading. That will help you make your drawings more accurate without having ot worry about shading. sometimes, shading is what we worry about and not how the actual object looks. lastly, when you do get into shading, test out the pencil. use the side of the pencil to shade and do value scales. And don't be afraid to go dark! goodluck and keep drawing!
