Klaus Thanks for the encouragement - It means a lot!
My CHOW stuff from this week - my first contest entry on CA.
And a sketch for fun - practicing drawing from imagination without photo reference
Sort of a photo study - it's a guy that draws stuff sometimes:

awasome!! i hope to get your level someday!
Thanks for dropping by my sketchbook earlier... here to return the favour!
Your studies are awesome.. there's something to the photo studies you do that has a really distinct look about it - almost reminds me of the methods I see in airbrush artists! I think your personal work would definitely benefit from doing some more master studies.. I spied a bit of weakness when you have to replicate more of a traditional brushstroke with multiple colours to it, rather than that really cool smooth look you get with the photos. Only reason I suggest more of the master studies is I think it'll help you think about soft and hard edges a bit more. It's something I've found invaluable in my own work as photographs often don't have that ability to choose where to put detail and contrast - they just capture everything!
The subtle texture you got with the venom statue is something I'd like to see more of too.
Johnny Thanks!
Zephyri Hey! Thanks for the kind words and the advice! I definitely see what you mean. Also, with master studies, I've done a small handful, but EVERY time I do it seems to translate to improvement in my personal work.
Here are some rough thumbnails of a character:

Doodle from the daily sketch group - topic: giant brute struggles to fight a small, fast imp. Soo..
![]()
Great stuff! The last one, the fight with the imp, is pretty dynamic and nice story telling. My only suggestion would be to use harder brushes for your paintings. Other than that, keep it up!
Featheredface Thanks! I really was focusing heavily on that. I'm glad it came across to you.
Quick sketch and anatomy study stuff.
Fun with markers

Environment study and some Bridgman.

Ew.. couldn't draw for 3 straight days... feels disgusting. So good to get back at it.
Here's a quick timed study to shake off the rust:

Amazing start !you are doing some really great studies, working hard and you'll improve quite fast to the desired level if you keep it like that
I like overall most of your art, keep it up!
Matija Thanks!

So it's been about 2 months since I've posted anywhere. Essentially this is what's up:
Born at the end of September!! Beautiful and healthy baby girl! I'm a lucky man!
So here's some stuff from sometime between my last post and now.
Lastly this is some album artwork that I did for my "day job". The client wanted a propaganda influenced style with my unique spin on it. First image is the cover (sans-logo and album title). 2nd is an interior booklet 2 page spread.

Starting to get back into a balanced routine of practice and work... here is some stuff.
I've been waking up and beginning with gestures to get the blood flowing and then getting an hour of anatomy study in before beginning work. Afterward, I devote whatever time I have to personal projects, challenges, or studies.
And... Alice Morgan!

Some thumbnail/silhouette work form today. Trying to focus on not rushing things and starting very middle key.

I had come up with a self-challenge idea for myself but I don't know that it's feasible, especially when I'm already behind. The idea is to draw 16 heads a day minimum for 30 days - 8 from reference and then 8 from imagination. The problem for the first day was that I spent way too long on each individual sketch. I'll still try to keep it going even though I didn't get 16 out of day one and just make them quicker sketches.
Anyway, here is Day 1 of my challenge plus some anatomy work from the other day. And as far as I got with my infected scientist before my power went out last night.

Today's heads - I don't think 16/day is going to work but I'm going to keep that as the goal for now. The bottom row is from imagination.
![]()
Today's heads/faces - managed to get all 16 in there - top 2 rows from reference, bottom 2 from imagination. Need to go fasterrrrr...
And some sketchbook doodles from today.

Heads from yesterday and a doodle from this morning.
![]()
Heads from yesterday and the day before. Still have to get around to today's.
Tried a few things different on this set - after each referenced one I would do it again from memory immediately after - on a few of them I referred back to my original drawing to reference the lighting. And the last two are just from imagination.
And yesterday's

Heads from Saturday and today - did some Loomis instead on Sunday. Today's were timed to start out and I was working on going without lines from the start with varied success.
Saturday's were timed as well - between 5 and 10 minutes each
Today's - first 6 referenced - last 4 form imagination - wasted a ton of time on the first girl.
Sketchbook stuff
And a still life set up
