I love the classical Italian art, but most modern art now is just shapes and colors and the artist says that it's a statement on some controversial subject that's happening today.

I think you are confusing the dated phrase "modern" with the word contemporary.

Is that for me? I suppose i did not phrase my post correctly. I dont think modern art applies anymore to my knowledge, I think the types of art the OP was referring to are now alloted to their own specific categories and referring to modern art as encompassing all art created today is incorrect.

i've often thought about making a painting completely from scratch, that is, mix my own pigments, make a proper ground, build the frame, boil my own rabbits... no modern shortcuts. one day i'll follow through i hope.

I have wanted to incorporate Baroque style ever since reading Burne Hogarth's books in which he praises it. Tons of hard work though; and I need to go back to basics to fill in some gaps. I see what you are asking though- it is awesome when the elegant classical styles are combined with exciting modern themes.
