Figured should start one, since I've gotten back into drawing. Scanner doesn't work and camera is rubbish, so won't post pencil stuff for now, just the digital.

For starters a few quick studies in my living room around the perimeter allowed by my Cintiq cord.

Came for the title, stayed for the arts. I like the sense of depth in the view from your window. I will say that at least in the first pic, your perspective looks off, as though you drew it just as you saw it without first thinking of it in perspective -- if that makes sense. If I'm wrong, I stand corrected.

Nice start, though! I like the texture on those fruits a bunch, nicely done. Can't wait to see more.

Hey thanks. Yeah, I usually rough out the perspective loosely in the drawing, but I don't stress over it. In the first one the source in real life looks weird, as the objects aren't aligned to each other.

Anyway, here's one from imagination. Just had a fun idea. Kind of want go stage this IRL and paint it to learn how it should look like instead of what I think it should look like, but for now...weeeee!

Did another version of the grapefruit in different light. Bit looser and quicker. Didn't really finish, because half way through got hungry and ate the grapefruit, and that was that.

Noodled a bit more with an older sketch. It came about as an exploration into painting from imagination vs. painting from mental images, and the potential differences of the two. I'll elaborate on that further when I get around to finishing the alternative version of this.

Reworked the window from yesterday. Well, not really reworked, more like made a color variant.




Super quick study, maybe not even a study, just threw down some colors of the sunny afternoon outside.



Ocean wave reconstruction using only some notes and a sketch I scribbled down last year when I was on the beach in Carmel. Never painted ocean before and don't really know how, so I guess this is kind of good practice.

Gwuh. I get the feeling I'd benefit a whole lot from studying your work and figuring out how you manage to piece together a believable world even in the places where your brushmarks are clearly showing. My instincts tell me it's because your values/colours/tones are all superultrafansastic, but some of the life studies in particular look so convincing that it merits a closer look.

Hey Gene, your colors are lovely, or should I say, great!
You handle them with ease, and it shows.
For a crit, I think should work on your linework more, it seems to be somewhat sketchy, or less certain, less bold than your colors, and I think that is the weakest point in your work. Work on that, and you grow the fastest!
Great stuff, I'll be checking in later to see how much you've improved.

PS: love the wall of doors btw. Very nice. Your imaginatory stuff overall is quite impressive. Nice work, man!

Lol the goldfish is something straight out of a nightmare! Today it started snowing here as well..makes me feel like going outside and sketching kids throwing snowballs but its so damn cold so watching out of the window is a good idea! great paintings, rock on!

Thanks for the kind words, guys. Harmageddon, agreed on the crit. Right now I want focus on color and shape though.

Anyway, some updates.

Few speedies of the trees out the window. Different times of day. Pretty terrible on the color still, need to practice more.







And also did a line sketch. I guess it's supposed to be a giant lighthouse or tower. Don't even know what's going on and what's with all the scaffolding and ropes and supports, but it just popped into my head and I was like "Yeah, that seems like a good idea." Might paint this later.

Also, love the tower thing that's going on. I'd love to see it painted or at least cleaned up. I think it could be a really powerful line drawing.

Great sketchs! About the tower, maybe it's my personal feeling, but something's missing on the right. Distortions you used on the tower to emphasize the scale occur when you shoot on a kind of fisheye lens. The point is, that they occur on the edge of the lense, not in the center, and so it looks like you've clipped a part of drawing.

Some updates;

A few color studies from life. Trying to grasp the color relationships. Still fail, but getting better.



Then I tried to do some different lighting/time of day/weather sketches from imagination.



And then this image came into my head and so I painted that.

These are some pretty badass skills you've got. Positively impressed.
I don't really know what else to say; You have variety and skill, and
I don't really think I can ask for much more in an artist. Perhaps you
should think a little about brush efficiency, or, I don't know. It
doesn't really matter. Love the reversal painting, with the doors and
stuff. That shit is the bomb.
